Barcelona Where is Plaza Catalunga?
Posted: Sun July 5, 2009 06:18 AM UTC
Trying to narrow down where to stay in Barcelona; a couple tips said near Plaza Catalunga, but looking up hotels, I am not seeing that spot on the maps. Help in just what part of the city?
THANKS!

It's downtown. Put "Plaza Catalunya" here http://maps.google.es/?ie=UTF8&hl=es
It will show you.

For easy reference, it is at the North (top) end of Las Ramblas. I stayed at a hotel...Hotel Lleo....somewhat near that Placa...and still had an easy time getting around downtown Barcelona...

just to clarify, as you may get confused with the spelling:
- Plaça de Catalunya: Catalan, official name
- Plaza de Cataluña: Spanish, you can still find it this way in some brochures, books, websites, etc

Basically, as central as you can be!

As said above, it is the big square on 'top' of Las Ramblas and 'below' the 2 main avenues of Eixample (Passeig de Gràcia and Rambla de Catalunya). Therefore, it is between the Old Town (Gotic, Raval...) and Eixample area, so is walking distance of most sights. It is a big transport hub (buses, train, metro...) as well so easy to reach anywhere else in town. Cons: it is very busy and noisy

This is great, especially the outline of hotels -- NOW, does anyone have any experiences, good and bad, of the hotels in that area? I have the Hotel Lleo to look up, then found alot from the hotel map, but if anyone has input, that would be very helpful -- an awful lot to choose from!

Do you mean Plaça Catalunya, right in the centre of Barcelona?

Do you REALLY want to stay in a city centre? Why not look outside Barcelona - Vilanova i La Geltru, Monistrol, Montserrat, Igualada - for instance? Cheaper, less noisy, less polluted!

I stayed at Hotel Lleo during my first stay in Barcelona. I really liked the hotel. They gave me a really nice room with a street view. It was a huge room with a huge bathroom.

Since it is West of Las Ramblas, there was a bit of a walk to reach Las Ramblas to go to where I wanted to visit on that trip. I didn't mind walking...I tend to 'discover' things during walks.

On my second visit, I had chosen to visit places on the East side of Las Ramblas, so I didn't stay in Hotel Lleo..but it wasn't because I didn't want to. I just wanted to start out closer to where I was 'exploring'.

hehehe.... this is fun, we have so different perceptions about what is far off or a bit of a walk.... If someone asked me about location of Hotel Lleó (I know it because I was working very close) I would have said it is VERY close to Las Ramblas. I used to walk to La Boqueria after work to but some food before taking the metro back home... it was not more than a 10 min walk
