Your question is way too general. Thailand is one of the safest countries in the world to visit and has a large number of tourist attractions from the mountains and hilltribes in the north, the ancient cities of Sukuthai and Ayuthaya in the centre, the incredible city that is Bangkok and the glorious beaches of the south. Hotels are avaiable to suit all budgets and are nearly always great value for money. What to you want to do? Read my Thailand pages and those from other VT members.

Yes, Thailand is safe to travel alone, have just come back and I'm a woman travelling alone. It depends on what you want to see and do, Beaches, or Hill Tribes & Mountains?

Thailand is physically safe for the most part. Now when it comes to scams, that's a whole different world. I can't stress this enough, but keep your wits about you the whole time.

The vast majority of Thais are splendid, friendly, and shy in nature. However be very wary of those approaching you. They have different agendas. (Not that all are bad, but Thais are notorious for being rip-offs.) It's not just the Thais either, more and more outsiders are preying on visitors as well, including farangs.

As far as tourist sites go. I recommend anywhere else outside of Bangkok. Unless you just love to see temples, buy overprice gems, indulge in the dirty filthy sex scenes, and get scammed all the while, then Bangkok is definitely the place for that.

Chiangmai in the north is lovely - mountainous region that is home to many hilltribe people. Phuket and Koh Samui are nice beaches to the south.

Hotels are plenty this time of the year (low season) for all budgets.

Anything goes in Thailand. Don't let your guards down and you'll be alright. Have fun!

As mentioned above, your question is too general for a country like Thailand which has virtually everything to suit every taste in terms of type of holiday desired. Pls more specific in what you like: waterfalls, culture, islands or mountains etc...

Thailand is a very safe country any time of the year - as with touring virtaully anywhere, use your common sense and you ought to encounter no problems at all.

Thanks for your responses. Like you Balhannah I will be traveling alone and I just want to check if its safe place to travel for a solo woman. I am interested in the temples, culture, it arts, food, silk, not on its city visual delights.

I think ChrisThao's description on Bangkok is a bit misleading. Yes, there is the notorious sex trade in the city, but that is confined to 3 relatively small areas, Patpong, Nana Plaza (NEP) and Soi Cowboy - these areas are easily avoided. On the plus side you have the temples with the Grand Palace a "must see" and the city is a useful starting point for trips to other places such as Ayuthaya and "the bridge over River Kawai". There is a lot more to Bangkok than sex and scams. It is a great city that is safe for lone travellers.

Hi

I completely agree with John on ChrisThao's comment : Bkk is and has so much more than just scams and sexscenes ! It is a beautiful city with a very special atmosphere. Someone visiting Thailand can't say he/she has really been there if you haven't seen Bkk ! You say that you like culture, so you can't skip Bkk in your plans.
The Grand Palace is a true must-see, as are Wat Po and Wat Arun. Take a rivertaxi and follow the Chai Phraya to see the day-to-day life along the river. Stop at the Royal Barges museum to see the magnificent Royal Barges that only come out on very rare occasions.
With your ticket from the Royal Palace you have 1 free entrance in the next 7 days to the Vimanmek Royal Mansion, which used to be a royal summer residence and is the largest teakwood mansion in the world.
Go up Baiyoke tower for a stunning view over the city.
From Bkk you can easily go to Ayutthaya, which is worth spending a few days there. Or go to Kanchanaburi for the famous Death Railway & the bridge over the river Kwai.
I am also a fan of the north, and especially of Chiang Mai, which has a complete atmosphere than Bkk. The north of course also has it's temples. You can go to the hill tribes, the "golden triangle", the long necked Karen near Mae Hong Son, ...

You see, it all depends on what sort of thing you want to visit and on the amount of time you have. But to me, both parts of this magnificent country have their own charm and can't be missed out on !

Have fun !
Jessika

Dirty, filthy what? Scams? what have you been reading sunshine?
If someone walks up to you in the streets in your home country I hope you are wary. It's the same in Thailand. I had a stroll down Sukhumvit today and I was harassed by Indian tailors, chaps promoting turkish baths, beggars, massage offers, shoe shine girls. I just ignored the lot.
Bangkok is a great city so get out there and enjoy it.
