Glitch in the display of websites in the travel guides? Long URLs are broken, don't work
Posted: Sat July 4, 2009 04:43 AM UTC
Morning all experts and VT techies.
Something seems to be wrong with long URLs in the travel guide section. Long URLs with one or many line breaks get "cropped" at the end. The whole URL appears but the last few letters/signs/numbers are "disconnected" from the link itself and appear black and not blue. And these links don't work.
BUT these links work perfectly on the respective VT'ers page!

Example, GrandmaR, Venice, travel guide, (at the moment) 4th tip "Morning excursion from the ship":
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Italy/Veneto/Venice-140867/Things_To_Do-Venice-San_Marco_and_Piazza-R-1.html
The link's last letters: n_marco.htm are what a meant when I wrote disconnected from the rest of URL.
On her Venice page, the link works properly (1st tip):
http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/4a9c6/22643/4/

Same for me and London, via travel guide, (at the moment) 7th tip "Her Majesty's home is open only in summer":
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Greater_London/London-309228/Things_To_Do-London-Buckingham_Palace-R-1.html
broken in the travel guide (does not link to the correct website), but works perfect on my London page (1st tip):
http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/80c21/4b7ec/4/?o=1&i=2

I hope I described that phenomenon properly. Is this something temporary? I think could be connected to the one I described here:

Morning smiles and thanks in advance.

yes I can see what you are talking about, the final part of the url is not underlined and not "active".

Thanks Pam :-)
Something similar happened recently when I was writing a tip. When I copied a website into the website box, it didn't show the whole URL after I'd saved the tip. So I made a link to it in the tip text box section. That worked.

I know this was fixed in the past, but than tip layout was changed again (and I seem to remember G was so proud about the new layout).

Do you want me to go down this forum and find the related stuff? I know we talked about it.

As usual: change requires change,

Thanks PJ!! I heard of tinyurl before but don't know exactly what it does.
But the one I described is newer, definitely. I know because I have clicked on links in the travel guides since then and up to now and also the longer ones (with line breaks).
I can get around this actual one by adding the link to the tip text part. But it would be good to know if it might get fixed. It will be low priority though, from what they plan actually, I am aware of that.

Yes it's not a matter of changing to tinyurl as there are many many links that will be effected. I'm sure some simple coding could fix it. I reported to techos.

Thank you Pam :-) Let us know what the techos say. I will transport my affected links into the text field for several tips in case solving this takes longer or is of lower priority.

So the link works from MY page on Venice, but does not work from the Venice city guide page. It sounds like that is a glitch in the programming for the city guide pages - possibly related to striping out color and formatting codes etc for the city guide pages.

Yes, Grandma, it seems to be for everyone who has added links which result in a line break. They work on the individual pages but not from the travel guide.
Pam has already informed the staff :-)
