gather those rosebuds - steamed in beer.

the last known franchise of over 500 Lum's restaurants, located in Dania Florida, has closed to become a diner. famed for hot dogs steamed in beer and the Ollie, a spiced hamburger, this family owned operation had over 500 venues when sold to Kentucky Fried Chicken in the early 70's, the beginning of the end. contents, including the cheap tiffany style lamps were auctioned. now the very last one is no more and the memories are flooding into my brain unbidden. do you all remember Lum's?

There actually is one Ollie's left. It is on the corner of Third & Kentucky in Louisville Kentucky. Still the best burger around.

I do remember Lum's. I've eaten there on my travels. WoW! No more. Reminds me of the "Hot Shoppes" in VA. They were started by J.W. Marriott-yes of Hotel fame. They started in this neck of the weeds, in 1927 and spread to seven states. I guess as Marriott got in to hotels, they just let the shoppes go by the wayside, except for the one in Arlington. His wife made him and her son's promise her that as long as she was alive, that they wouldn't get rid of them. She even waited tables in the Arlington one, so I've been told. Well, in 1996, they closed that one, and the final one in DC closed in 1999. So much for Mom's memory. ~

We use to have one in our neighborhood. It closed ages ago. I went there for their "Key Lime Pie" the best....food was good too.
