We are arriving by train, leaving by plane. With that in mind, any suggestions for good places at reasonable price that would be close to must sees?

The best place to stay (in my opinion) is near Plaza Catalunya in the direction away from La Ramblas. That street is a tourist trap (with the exception of the opera and the municipal market) from top to bottom. Not a good idea to walk there at night. The nice area is l´eixemple.
The airport bus to the city goes to Plaza Catalunya; the last stop. I´m quite sure that this bus stops at the Sants Station on the way back to the airport. If this bus doesn´t take passengers to the station, a regular city bus, the Metro or a taxi will; it´s not too far from Plaza C.

Yes - near Catalunya - Barcelona is fairly spread-out so being near one sight isn't always handy for another.
Park Guell is right up to the North, Olympic Village South-East, etc etc - Oh - and La Sagrada Familia is a fair way away from other sights too - but well-worth going-to.
