Sevilla Best spot to stay?
Posted: Fri July 3, 2009 08:20 PM UTC
I am trying to understand the different quarters, and wondering which section is truly the best to be in (especially for those depending on foot/public transportation)
I have seen what looks like a nice place, closer to the train station (where we will be arriving and departing from) and they advertise within easy distance of the main tourist attractions. Some comments say it is easy walking distance; others complain it's too far. 3 in particular I saw were Pasarela Hotel Sevilla, Sevilla Center, and HOtel Occidental Sevilla, which was quite close to the train station.
Any thoughts on those, or what is the best area to stay? And we are arriving in town around midnight -- will we have any trouble getting transportation?

Although I only did a day trip to Sevilla, locals pronounce it as sebijja, but I think that the train station is not in the middle of the attractions, however, not too far from them too. I am assuming that there is only one train station in the city because there are two bus stations for sure. We walked atleast one mile from the bus station, which was adjacent to the train station, to get to the tourist information center, which rather appeared to be located in the middle of attractions and really close to the Cathedral. Hope it helps a little bit.
At the risk of digressing, I would suggest you to take bus when moving from one city to another inside Andalucia. Unless you get discounted train tickets, buses are too cheap than trains. I took a bus from Granada to Cordoba for about 15 euros and it was comfortable and fast.
Happy Travelling!

The 3 hotels you mentioned are all outside the old city area of Seville. Known as 'casco antigua'. I think if you are coming to Seville as tourist and not on business, it makes sense to find a place within the old city areas. For example the Barrio Santa Cruz or Barrio Arenal.
You then get the 'flavour' of the narrow and winding old streets as well as the newer parts instead of staying in a hotel that could be anywhere.

At Santa Justa station, you have taxis. A taxi into the 'casco antigua' part of Seville should not cost much. Under €10 for sure. So look around the two barrios mentioned above to start with. The area around the station is fairly nondescript and although the Occidental is a well positioned hotel do not be put off by arrival at midnight. This is not late in Seville in the warmer months when temperatures hit over 40 degrees and the only time to cool off is at night.

Since I started my search, I also came across the Alcazar, which is within the old city, and by reviews/photos/descriptions, it sounds like a decent place at a reasonable cost.
Any comments on it?
I'm glad to hear Spain keeps moving into the wee hours. We ran into a problem in London where the underground and a good portion of their buses quit around the witching hour -- got ourselves in quite a pickle one night!

And 2 others I wanted to mention: Sercotel Fernando III and Hotel Dona Manuela Casa; the second had some negative feedback, but both are in the old city -- comments?

I stayed at Hotel Monte Carmelo, at the Triana quarter-( http://nederland.hotels.com/hotels-spanje/hotels-sevilla/monte-carmelo/)
Really nice hotel. Its at the other side of the river but you can reach everything on foot. You can walk in 15 minutes to Plaza España in one direction and 15 minutes to the other direction till the Maestranza. The city center is between those spots. If you want to take a bus, its only a 3 minuts walk for the'circle bus' who will show you the whole city, for one ticketprice, there are many busses also a bus to the main station (need one hour). I would not recommand a hotel near the station, cause there is nothing to see, only appartments. We gave 25 euros for a taxi from the airport- in Spain you mostly have to pay for your suitcase on the bus.
Triana is a typical spanish quarter, nice restaurants ( not with tourist menus) there are flamenco schools and there is a fresh market.

Hotel Alcazar is in a good location although I would not say it was actually in the Casco Antigua. More on the edge ! Its just across the main road called Menendez Pelayo from the narrow streets leading to the Cathedral area and the actual Alcazar. I believe it has been modernised in recent years and if the cost is attractive then the location is pretty good. Near to plenty of places to eat and tapas bars etc. Its also very close to Prado de San Sebastian bus terminal as well as near the place where the airport bus stops/starts in case you need to go to the airport. (Cost €2.30 one way) and close to the Metro Line One that only began a couple of months ago that links Triana with the east and south of Seville.
Also the Tram link between San Sebastian and Plaza Nueva is nearby.
So if the cost is good then it may well be suitable. And its not far to walk through the narrow alleys to Carboneria which is great in the evening for a cool beer or tow and watching the free flamenco show that I think still starts at 11pm.
