Thanks ...we are staying in Chigwell, zone 4...it is a bit if a trip in to the center but this is where we have exchanged houses with another family.
I'll check the transport site but as we are not native Londoners I don't always understand everything. Would it pay to buy from there? We will have a car after the 7 days as we are doing some touring and return to the airport by car.
Is Heathrow in zone 4? The transport authority gave us two routes to get the Heathrow to Chigwell. They did not answer about the coinnection of buying a ticket for the tube at a railway station as we have been advised by VT members.

What is your question?

It depends (A) on the question you ask (B) the day and time of day you travel and whether there are any engineering wortks on the routes (C) if you want the cheapest way (D) if you want the quickest way (E) and other factors...

Chigwell is East London & heathrow is West London. Two opsite sides of the cirty. I wouldn't take car for London sightseeing. Nearly all atractions are in zone 1, and that means congestion charges for your car. Every day is £8 if you do not pay on the day than is £10 and you gave 48hrs to pay up.
Parking is BIG problem & very expencive.
Heatrow is in zone 5 and where you are staying zone 4. So I would do following. buy one way ticket to the first station within zone 4, than at the same station (Heatrow) buy weekly travel card for zone 1,2,3,& 4. Cost you less.
For example I was in London on Tuesday, ticket for zone 1 & 2 cost me £5.60 for whole day, if I bought return from East Putney to Victoria, I was looking into £8.00 price.
You will same £££.

"Would it pay to buy from there?" Would it pay to buy what from where? If you are talking about buying a travelcard or an oyster card online, the only reason you'd do that is if you wanted to worry about packing one extra thing. The visitor oyster costs and extra £2 and I don't see any added benefit, you can get one in London. You have to pay a £3 deposit but you get that back when you return it.

There's usually always more than one way to get from point a to point b via tube, it looks to me that the most straightforward way is to take the Piccadilly line to Holborn and pick up the Central line. But ask when you are at Heathrow, there may be an easier way (ie stations without stairs or long connections) or there may be planned or unplanned maintenance going on.
