I am going to naples but i've never been there. Can you recommend an area to stay if it shoudn't be too rough. Me and my girlfriend wants a quiet place and not to "dangerous" at night? Also maybe with a hotel recommendation?

Hope you can help.

I have not stayed in Naples itself, so can't help with specific areas......I stayed in Sorrento, an hour's journey by Circumvesuviana train (frequent, cheap). That might be an option to consider. Sorrento has excellent public transport links to Naples, Pompeii, Capri, the Amalfi Coast.....and is a pleasant town to stay in. There are direct buses from Naples airport, if you are flying in.

Have a look at Naples (and Sorrento etc) hotels on www.venere.com The guest reviews are honest, and will often tell you about the hotel surroundings as well. I've used it often and have not been disappointed.

I've stayed several times right in the centre of Naples, no worries whatsoever although of course you have to watch your bag, pockets etc. in the streets. It did not seem to me to be dangerous at night - although it seems it's not a good idea to walk up to the higher levels at night as drug addicts apparently frequent that area. The hotel I stayed at in the Spanish Quarter (formerly a no-go area!) was just off via Toledo, and called the Toledo. It was quiet (off the main road, and on a tiny street, so only the odd scooter buzzes past..), reasonably priced, and does a good breakfast, although some of the rooms are a bit gloomy. See http://www.booking.com/hotel/it/toledonapoli.en.html.
Although it's a chain hotel (Marriott) I liked the Mediterraneo for its stunning rooftop restaurant, where you eat breakfast looking out over the bay - and the "sfogliatelle" were as good as at the famous Café Gambrinus. I have also stayed at the Jolly Hotel in the same area, and wandered around at night very happily in the Via Chiaia and Piazza del Plebiscito.
Tripadvisor is good on hotels: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g187785-Naples_Campania-Hotels.html

dont go there - its a dump - dirty - pickpockets - petty theft - if you are there - get on the train and keep going to Pompeii and Sorrento - of the ferry to Sorrento or Capri

if you do stay, the museum of Pompeii artifacts are good to see

Agree with the last comment. Apart from a couple of well chosen postcard views there is nothing pretty about Naples. I'd feel safer in Tel Aviv anytime than this hell hole.

Naples is a "once seen never forgotten sort of place" and yes I agree that it is far better to stay in Sorrento and maybe have a day trip to Naples for a look around. If you must stay in Naples, I can recommend the Hotel Albergo Golfo, which is a beautifully renovated small hotel in the general direction of the port (just off the main street that leads from the Napoli Centrale to the port). This hotel was the only saving grace I found in Naples, but to each his own, we all like different things and I am one of those people who, sorry to say, does not like Naples. See my Naples page for further info on the hotel.

OK.....so here's the relevant public transport info:

www.metrodelmare.com for ferries around the costline/to Naples

http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en/Orari

for Circumvesuviana train times (Naples, Pompeii (get off at Pompeii Scavi Villa dei Mysteri ), Herculaneum (get off at Ercolano), Villa Poppea (get off at Torre Annunziata).

Sorrento>Capri ferry and hydrofoil timetables:

http://www.capri.net/en/ship-timetable

Bus from Sorrento to Positano/Praiano/Amalfi (superbly scenic trip):

http://www.sitabus.it/wps/portal/OrariCampania

under Quadro 15. Bus goes from outside Sorrento Circumvesuviana station, buy tickets from the newsagent at the station entrance.

Sounds good with the train tips also. I am also going to stay 7 days at Ischia. My next question will be.

1. Any good restaurant tips at Ischia
2. Any good restaurant tips at Sorrento
3. Is it also worth to go see versuv and walk at it? If yes, how to get there - also by circumvesuviana?

I have a few restaurant etc tips on my Sorrento pages but you will be spoilt for choice. There are lots and lots and lots! You defintiely won't go hungry.

As for Vesuvius, there are tours available. One company is

http://www.too-to-train.it/?mylng=EN

which sells its tickets from an old railway carriage at the entrance to the Circumvesuviana station.

Or you can go there yourself by 'ordinary' bus. Train to Pompeii-Scavi-Villa-dei-Mysteri then walk into modern Pompeii (about 15 minutes) and catch the bus.

Timetables here:

http://www.vesuvianamobilita.it/orari/vesuvio/vesuvio.htm

I didn't make it, sadly.....Vesuvius was 'closed' on my last visit.
