This doesn't answer your question, but worse-case scenario - there are bulletin boards with tons of paper notes of people looking for similar things in the Internet cafes and backpacker hotels in Darwin.

A tour could be the way to go. I am sure a lot of young people would do these.
With a tour you would be given great information along the way,usually meals and accommodation are included, remember this when you are looking at the prices.

One that I found that had a number of options is

Oz Backpacker Tours. They seem to have small numbers on each tour.They seem to call into all the great places along the way.

Look for one that goes from Darwin to Alice Springs/Uluru.
