Egypt Amsterdam to Cairo/Alexandria!
Posted: Fri July 3, 2009 11:09 AM UTC
Hi All!

I am plannning an Egyptian get-away this winter during Christmas time. I will be starting from Amsterdam and would like to get to Alexandria or Cairo. But I cannot find any good budget flights that may be operating on this route. All that I find is way over budget!

Can anyone tell me any cheap flights from Amsterdam to Alexandria or Cairo? And which city should I choose to stay in, Alexandria or Cairo? I would also like to visit the Sphynx and the Pyramids. Is it all possible to be done in 4 days? Any help is highly appreciated as I dont have any idea about how and where to go in Egypt. Also, how will be the weather in that part of the world at that time of year????

Thanks again!

I would stay in Alexandria over Cairo. Its cleaner and you have the beach right there.
Do a day excursion to visit the Pyramids and the Sphinx. Its about 3-4 hrs away from Alexandria.
The temperature in Egypt during December is very comfortable.

www.airberlin.com flys from Duseldorf-Germany to few places in Egypt.
They have rather reasonable prices, if you book now for december. There is train from Amsterdam to Duselforf, and change at Dusseldorf Hbf for Dusseldorf Airport.
Also chek this Dutch last minute bargain holidays site.
www.d-reisen.nl (in Dutch only ,I am afraid) but look on the right side of the screen & they have 10best deals for that week posted regulary.

I havent been to Alexandria but have been to Cairo. Is big, noisy, somewhat dirty buy the weather will be OK, just leyer your clothes...
I would choose Luxor for few days over Christmas.
Choose one of the rental properties/flats/rooms by the Nile,in one of the villages on the western side of Nile, you can see Luxor in its glory from your windows.
Happy travels

Well there are cheap charter flights to Egypt but mostly sold to big touroperators so hard to get.

I am looking for cheap flights to Egypt as well and found via
www.vliegwinkel.nl
a very cheap ticket Amsterdam/Cairo by KLM (straight flight) for 252 Euro.

I am not sure what budget you are on.

I would stay in Cairo during that time. Alexandria will be more cold and the beaches...... the sea will be to cold to swim. Alexandria is about 2 hours by train away from Cairo. A first class ticket will cost about 25 LE that is 3,5 Euro.
When I am in Cairo I always stay at the Garden City House Hotel. It is a budget hotel at a top location. Some rooms have views on the Nile. On the back of the hotel is Tahrir Square with all means of public transportation all over Cairo. The Egyptian Museum is a 5 minute walk away and Pyramid area 20 to 30 minutes away by taxi. Taxi costs 20 to 30 LE depending on your bargaining skills.
From there you can walk to Islamic Cairo (Khan el Khalili/market) in about 30 minutes or 5 minutes by taxi. Cost 5 to 7 LE again depending on your bargaining skills.
Old Coptic Cairo is 2 stops by metro away from Tahrir Square: Girghis Station. I don't know how much it costs but about 1 to 2 LE.

The weather will be cold to Egyptian standards but still very comfy to Dutch standards. Just be sure to bring an extra sweater and jacket for the evenings.

Good luck, Dora.

Hi there
I always travel from the UK to Cairo via KLM as they have always offered good prices and the service is not bad either. Cairo vs Alex will very much depend on what you are after .. Cairo is more active & lively and of course you have many tourist attractions .. Alex is more peaceful and quiet and of course you have the lovely beaches .. although you won't be able to go for a swim in December .. A small word of advice though .. the weather in Alex in December (particularly in the second half) can be very bad at times .. they tend to have rain-storms which can be very unpleasant if you get caught in & tend to last 3 or 4 days at a time .. Best of luck anyway
