Cologne Public Transportation in Cologne
Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 09:08 PM UTC
Wow, the VRS site isn't too user friendly. Can anyone help me determine the cheapest form of city transportation? My wife and I will be staying there on September 7 - 11. Is the "Welcome Card" the best way to go or should we just buy the Daily Passes?
Thank You!

Depends what you want to do and where you want to go in and oaround Cologne, but I would take the Welcome Card, as it is not really expensive and it offers also a lot in addition. You can buy it for the first 3 days, and then take the daily tickets for each individual day afterwards (depending on how far you want to go there are different types of the daily ticket, e.g. if you want to visit Bonn as well it will be a bit more expensive). Or, if you had enough of sightseeing during the first 3 days and you don't want to travel a lot at the end, you could take the "4er" tickets (4 single tickets), it makes sense to take if you for example ride only once per day...

For Cologne you need tickets of the price level 2a (CityPlusTicket).
Single ticket is EUR 2,40.
4 single tickets are EUR 8,30.
Day ticket is EUR 6,90.
Mini group (2-5 persons) day ticket is EUR 10,10. This ticket is however on weekdays only valid past 9am.
Weekly ticket (calendar week) is EUR 19,50.

Thus as you time frame fits into one calendar week the weekly ticket would be the best choice in your case.

However if you plan trips from Cologne e.g. to Bonn (VRS price level 4) or Düsseldorf (VRS price level 5) it will be cheaper to buy mini group day tickets for the individual days according to your plans.

Are the day & group tickets good for all transportation? Buses & trams within the city. Thanks!

Yes. VRS tickets are zone-to-zone local public transport tickets. They cover all local public transport in the zones (= cities) they are valid for.
- regional trains (RB, RE)
- S-Bahn
- Stadtbahn (tram)
- buses
