Bavaria around Munich
Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 05:52 PM UTC
Hi,

I am going to Munich for 8 days. We are planning to rent a car and after visiting Munich for several days going somewhere around. Could you give me some advise? where could we go nice to visit? Perhaps it is a bit crazy but I saw Prague is around 3 hours and a half by car??

Thanks for the suggestions

www.viamichelin.com will give you routes and estimated timings.

It suggests Munich >Prague takes 3h 45m.....but that does not allow for traffic congestion/parking time etc. Maybe too much for a daytrip?

I think there are places much nearer (both within Germany, and Salzburg in Austria for example) which would make good daytrips from Munich.

Hi,
Good choice with Munich!
I would take at least two days for Munich. This will bring only a rough impression of town (for example no visit to the great Museums). To see something outside of Munich, I recommed to visit the alps. Especially the famous castle Neuschwanstein is much closer than Prague. Visiting the castle will bring you also to Füssen, the town closeby and to the mountains. Even though Munich is the capital of Bavaria, the mountain region south is more what is seen as Bavaria. More east of Munich you can visit the Chiemsee region, also with a nice castle. But there are much more places here (Innsbruck etc...) You see you do not need to drive so far, but of course it depends on your priorities.

Some links about the glimpse of things I mentioned above:

http://www.tegelbergbahn.de/fuers-auge-tegelberg.html (German only)
http://www.innsbruck.info/xxl/_lang/en/_site/innsbruck/index.html

Have fun and enjoy!
Christian.
PS: If going to mountains, watch the weather (esp. lightning)!

That is about 8 hours driving time. Why not save Prague for another trip in the future and see all the wonderful things near Munich? We spent a month near Munich once and didn't begin to see everything in the area. It is just absolutely gorgeous all around there.

Places we particularly enjoyed:
(1) Garmisch-Partenkirchen (try spaghetti ice cream)
(2) Mittenwald (a real favorite of ours)
(3) Oberammergau
(4) Wieskirche (in Wies) a stunning church in gorgeous surroundings
(5) Fussen with Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles and Lake Forggensee
(6) Linderhof castle and grounds
(7) Ottobeuren has a stunning abbey
(8) Lake Konstanz (the Bodensee as it's called there)
(9) Lindau and Meersburg on Lake Konstanz, both beautiful towns
(10) For gorgeous scenery, the Kleinwalsertal Valley

There is so much else to do but these are all easy day trips from Munich and all are worth the trip. They are near enough you wouldn't have to spend half the day in your car. You could combine the first 4 into one day; the next 2 in another day trip and the last 3 into a third day trip.

Whatever you choose, have a great trip. Beautiful country!

Yes these are good ideas! But I think the last trip is already too much. I live inbetween Lake Constance and Munich...

Absolutely right . . . the Kleinwalsertal Valley is a day trip all by itself. I wasn't proofreading very well. Now you have 4 days of day trips!

Thanks gubbi1. 8^)

Would suggest Linderhof and Neutschwein Castles [the latter MUST be pre-booked via the web otherwise you won't get in]

Oberammergau, is beautiful and Lake Konigsee

Driving in Prague is not to be recommended - case of not if but when you will get fined by the Police. Car crime is high - take a coach trip.

We were at Neuschwanstein Castle in May and did not need a reservation. Just go to the ticket office and reserve then. We had to wait for the second tour (tour required) but just visited Hohenschwangau while we waited. We actually enjoyed Hohenschwangau more than Neuschwanstein. Neuschwanstein is gorgeous viewed from Hohenschwangau or from anyplace nearby. Looks like a fairy-tale castle.

BTW, there is a horse and carriage to take you up the hill if you don't want to walk. You can get prices and information for both castles at http://www.hohenschwangau.de/557.0.html

If you are going in high season, you may wish to reserve ahead.

Since you are going to rent a car, I'd suggest to take a boats tour along the Danube and Main–Danube Canal through the Altmuehltal:

Drive to Weltenburg Abbey, hop on a ship (no reservation required, boats leave quite frequently) to - say: Riedenburg.

Weltenburg Abbey:

Altmuehltal:

Donaudurchbruch between the Abbey and Kehlheim:

Re: Neuschwanstein, I've been five times and never prebooked on the internet. Sometimes there can be a bit of a queue, but i've never personally waited more than half an hour. It is a lovely castle, as is Hohenschwangau. I'd really recommend to visit!

We booked in the morning AT Neuschwanstein and couldn't get in a morning tour. We had to wait until after lunch which was fine since we went to Hohenschwangau in the morning, ate lunch and visited Neuschwanstein in the afternoon. This was in May; I don't know what it would be like in high season. For that matter, I don't know when the OP is going. Might make a difference.
