Cuba Travel Restrictions
Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 06:03 AM UTC
I have been looking into planning a trip to cuba this january. I have been having a hard time finding information about punishments for this since the obama administration. I have read that restrictions were tighter with the Bush 2 administration, but I was wondering if it has become more relaxed since obama came into office? Are they fining people upon re-entry? If I go through cancun, and don't get my passport stamped, what are my chances of not being fined? Or is that just an inevitability?

Obama administration has eased travel for cuban americans into cuba but has not lifted the restrictions for americans or residents. but he has ceased funding of prosecution of those who had broken the law. so you can interpret it for yourself. there have not been any recent prosecutions but will take care about passport and stickers and goods from cuba.. especialy rum and cigars.
there are plenty of american visitors to cuba these days.. and as always they are welcome..

American journalists can travel without problems to Cuba. Maybe you can qualify for that sort of visa.

hi there,

i was just in cuba this february. what an incredible trip. they do not stamp your passport in havana. i spent a night in cancun coming and going. when coming back through customs in boston i just put i had been in mexico on the customs form. i didn't risk bringing anything back with me either. i violated federal law as soon as i paid my taxi driver into havana. i did wear my che tshirt back through customs under 2 other shirts. go and have fun. don't spend too much time in havana though. see the rest of the island.

forget about one administration or the other, just enjoy your trip. When you go thru Cancun or other port, they dont stamp your passport in Cuba. Do not use your American credit cards, carry cash instead. You wont be able to bring anything from there as if they search you upon reentry, but otherwise you will be fine.
You wont be fined thru Cancun, friends and family do it all the time thru Mexico, have relatives there and born in Cuba.
