What is a nice and not so expensive place/city/town/village to stay between Salzburg and Vienna?

Habsburg Vienna

Magnificent palaces, St. Stephen's cathedral, the Imperial burial places in the Capucine vault, the great collection of the Art Historical Museum, the representational buildings on the Ringstrasse, the Vienna Boys choir and the Spanish Riding School all reflect centuries of Habsburg grandeur and patronage of the arts.

Is it in Vienna or between Vienna and Salzburg? I am driving from Vienna to Salzburg and want to spend a night somewhere in-between.

Hallstatt is closer to Salzburg than it is to Vienna but it is a really beautiful town situated on a lake. It is sometimes described as the most beautiful town in Austria. You can stay in really lovely hotels or pensions which overlook the lake for around 55 Euro per night which includes breakfast. See the Hallstatt pages of some of the VT members by typing Hallstatt into the Search box at the top right hand of this page. If you are driving you could also visit some of the other beautiful towns around the same district. St. Wolfgang is one that comes to mind.

Hallstatt is not on the mainroad Vienna to Salzburg, but well worth visiting.

Another beautiful place to visit, closer to Vienna than to Salzburg, is Melk.

All the villages around the lakes in Salzkammergut are very nice.
