Yellowstone National Park Can we rely on GPS for driving in YNP
Posted: Wed July 1, 2009 05:22 PM UTC
Do the main attractions in YNP come up in GPS.We are planning to rent a car from after our arrival at Bonzane,MT airport and then drive to the park.
Based on your experiences will there be clear detour signs in case of road closures.
Is it a good idea to bring car seats or can we rent the cars with the carseats. we have a 6 and 2 yr old.

Hi there! We usually just bring our car seats because we are sure they would be available and not dirty and unsafe. Also. Car seats are FREE checked-in luggage...as for GPS, it depends on which model and year of update.I have driven in National Parks and usually they just have the main road but small roads (even in the well-known Grand Canyon) are not on the GPS...you just might need the park map but for general directions, the GPS is awesome and saves me and my wife a lot of road fights and arguments...more peaceful....Have fun! Norman :)

Are you by chance referring to Bozeman MT? If so, it is 1.5 hrs from Mammoth Hot Springs. about 85 miles. Don't think there would be any road closeures, in my 5 years working in YNP don't remember this road ever being closed. 1965 to 1970. As far as car seats are concerned you should contact the CRA directly for this information. Most CRA when booked on-line have information on car seats and you can order one at the same time you book the car.

The roads in Yellowstone are simple to follow, the highlights are well marked on the park map that you will be given when you enter Yellowstone. You won't have to worry about GPS when you are in the park. To see how simple the road lay out is:

Check this interactive map for a look at the park and where things are located:

Road construction in Montana is typically not a road closure, but lane closures. You can check on road construction by calling 511.

Be sure to dress warm for the park. At night it gets cool even in the summer. Take the kids hot potting. There is a spot in the park, where during the day you can go swimming in the river where the hot springs dump in. The water is warm and it is really different from swimming in a typical cold river or stream.
