we spent the weenkend in December at the Taj - got a great deal for $129 a night - anywhere around Boston Common is good and safe - check the web-based booking places for the best deal - walk up and down the main shopping street - Newbury Street - the further away from the Common you get, the more authentic and eclectic it gets - enjoy the seafood - a nice Italian and chinese area too

Hi Jen,
As the previous response stated, the Boston Common area is a great place to stay, and is right in the middle of most Boston attractions. I would avoid walking through the middle of the Common late at night as there tend to be a lot of homeless people camping there, and safety could be a concern. However, the streets surrounding the common are all very safe.

Other ideas are the Copley area (by the John Hancock building), and Comm. Ave (1 block from Newbury St.) From this area North to the Charles River is a very pleasant walk and safe as well. Going South into the Roxbury and Dorchester neighborhoods can get seedy, but I have never felt unsafe in the main areas of downtown Boston.

Boston is a very walkable city, and as a student I walked from the Northeastern campus to the North End (about 40 minutes). This is a great way to see the city. Enjoy!

Pick the Marriott Long Warf -- you will be in the heart of the activities...safe, and s/b not that expensive.
