Cairo How to enter Al Azhar Park??
Posted: Wed July 1, 2009 08:08 AM UTC
Is the only entrance on Salah Salem road? Are people allowed to walk to the entrance? The reason I ask is because the Lonely Planet book says you have to take a taxi to go to the park. I want to know if I can walk there from the downtown area, since it's only a few kilometers. Thanks!

If you like to walk, just walk. No problem!!

We walked all over Cairo, even crossed the City of the Dead on our own, never encountered any problem!

All Azhar Park is well worth a visit if you need to escape the buzz of the city and have some extra time to spend. Entrance fee is about 3LE.

Good luck, Dora.

The only entrance is on this road. There is no entrance on the side of Islamic Cairo, mainly for security reasons and to keep beggars away. You can walk if you want, but it's not that close, especially since you need to walk uphill. Pretty tiring under the hot hot sun. I'd suggest you take a taxi there, and walk back going downhill.

The best hour to go is when the sun goes down, as many Egyptian families come and enjoy the breeze, and you can hear the Muezzins calling for prayer from doznes of mosques at your feet.
