External Email Notifier Weird
Posted: Tue June 30, 2009 07:23 PM UTC
Maybe someone is aware of this, or maybe it's just me, but it seems that the function that allows you to get an external email to let you know when you get an email on VT is pretty sketchy. I only get an external email on rare and random occasions, so though I get at least a few VT emails a day I never know about them unless I log into VT. The other problem is that when I do get an external email they tell me that the VT email is from someone other than it is, usually someone I've never heard of. Like today I got one that said "Astrologers <daily@astrocenter.com> has sent you emails at VirtualTourist" when the only email I had was from Grantboone. Just thought I'd let you know!

Don't know much about email notification, as I have it turned off.....but it is possible that spammers (such as the astrologers one) will have been deleted by the time you look at your inbox.

Another oddity is that the astrologers email address has not appeared in your question whilst I am in 'reply' mode.

Yep I agree with leics. Spammers removed but caught by the notification system.

I am also having that problem as well. I'll log in and have a few emails from friends but I never know until I log in. I have yet to receive an email in my external saying I have mail.

One possibility is that your ISP os actually blocking/deleting such mails at source, before they ever reach your account. It may be assuming that they are bulk mailings/spam.

I've never been able to receive a VT newsletter, for example. My ISP just does not let them through.....and there is nothing I can do about it (apart from trying different email accounts from different providers).

Strangely, even though I have never received a VT newsletter, when email/replies notification first started everybody's box was automatically ticked. I got a huge amount of email notifiations that morning.....and unticked the notification box asap!

I'm able to receive the VT Newsletter. I use my hotmail account and any "junk" just goes into the junk mail folder and I always check there.

Brittany, are you saying that you have the email alerts "ticked"?

I have it checked to receive an email to my hotmail account when I receive mail on VT. But I never get an email telling me I have mail.

Oh ok, hotmail must have VT blocked.

Likely there is some reason, but meantime how about unticking the email alerts, clear your cache and tick it again. Might work, worth a try :-) Send yourself an email and see if it alerts :-)
