We will be flying from Newark,NJ. Need advice on which aiport is better to fly to,Jackson hole or West yellowstone airport. We are thinking to avoid flight cancellations and delays its a good idea to fly to a bigger airport.
We will mostly be visting Old faithful and the Lake area

West Yellowstone is closer - I typically fly into one and out the other - another option is Bozeman, MT - a bigger airport with Northwest flights from Minneapolis - maybe 2 hrs into YNP - its a pretty drive past Big Sky Mountain and the Gallatin River, known for its trout fly fishing

My family and I just got back from Yellowstone 3 days ago and we flew in to Bozeman, Montana. It was a small airport, but I didn't see any flight delays/ cancellations. Also, I agree that the drive into Yellowstone is amazing. Every square inch of the way is scenic (once you get out on the highway-which doesn't take long). We also went on a float trip and our guide said that every year, 6 airplanes fall off the runway at Jackson Hole (not that it would be deadly-just scary). Just something to think about. Any way you go, you'll have a great time.

I'm flying into Bozeman from Philly via Denver in September and having been to Yellowstone a few times know that this is a good way to go. As mentioned it is a bigger airport and the ride to the park is easy and scenic. I haven't been to either of the other airports but if you really want to fly into one of them chose Jackson airport since it is the bigger of the two and there are more flights.

If you are going to be at Old Faithful and Yellowstone Lake, the South Entrance is much closer ~ flying into Jackson Hole would be the way to go.
It's a nice airport in the "hole" or valley. Then you can see Grand Tetons
also, worth at least one night! Drive the 40 mile Grand Teton Loop Road.

We stayed at Old Faithful Inn and Yellowstone Lake Hotel ~ you will absolutetly love it! Go to a Ranger Program at the campground /Fishing Bridge/Yellowstone Lake if you can. We heard a great program on the grizzly, muah ha ha!
It was great :) Then there's the Lake String Quartet, they play at the Hotel each evening, very relaxing and entertaining. We still play their CD.

Check my YNP pages for other tips if you like.

You might get better prices at either Bozeman or Billings airports. They are bigger airports and not too far from the park.
