Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
London discounts+ many questions..thanks
Posted: Tue June 30, 2009 06:34 AM UTC
As it is almost July, am wondering if anyone knows of additional deals or discounts available from July 13th to 23rd for tourist sites? Have seen the national rail ones. (anything else?)
Someone said if you buy a 7 day paper ticket for metro
at a railway station this is good enough. Is this true? What if we
buy it at Heathrow? Can we use this 7 day ticket (we'll need a 4 zone) as we are with friends in Chigwell, from the airport? Also is it good on buses and trams?
Lastly is thereanything near Chigwell worth doing? Our friends are new to the area.

I have seen on this forum that the 7-day travelcards, when purchased at a railway station (not a Tube station/elsewhere) will work for the rail tickets two-for-one offer vouchers from the site linked below. I have no personal experience of this.

http://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/attraction-types/2for1london.aspx

The travelcards are valid for buses, trams (few of those) , Docklands Light Railway and Tube.

If you have a car, you could take a ride east to Maldon. It's a nice town on a pretty stretch of water. There's a water park if you have kids along, and there are some pubs for a nice place to stop and rest. It's also not that far from a very large shopping mall called Bluewater.

For discounts on all sorts of things, check http://www.vouchercodes.co.uk/.

You can print off codes or vouchers for many restaurants which will then give you 2for1 offers for main meals or free drinks, etc, etc. Sometimes you will get good discounts for stores or theme parks, etc but you'll have to check what's available.

I've used the restaurant codes many times so can confirm this works.

I have used the 7 day PAPER travelcards and have been able to use them for the 2 for 1 discounts on the website that Leics gave you. You must print out the voucher and present that to wherever you are trying to go, you should also be able to get a leaflet with additional blank vouchers at rail stations but I wouldn't count on it. It's a good idea to have a few blank ones if you do, we did have to use them once. I've never been asked to see my rail ticket/paper travelcard but that doesn't mean that they can't ask you to show it. It should be good for travel on the day you use it.

If you buy a 7 day travelcard at Heathrow, they will put it onto an Oyster card which is not valid for the discounts per the Daysout Guide

http://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/faq.aspx

You must buy the 7 day PAPER travelcard at a National Rail Station (ie Paddington or Victoria), you must go to the Rail Station part of the station, not the tube station.

Oh and you can buy the travelcards in advance if you want to buy a day travelcard for your 1st day, I bought mine at Paddington the day before we were going to use them but make sure you specify that it will start the next day.
