Ruinas Uxmal Like to visit Uxmal in July.. Traveling from Cancun...

I need to know how to get a bus in Merida that Goes to Uxmal. I will be traveling from Cancun, in July 09. I feel safe taking the bus from Cancun, however my girlfriend thinks that this trip is going to be complicated. I'm bilingual and this might be some help. The more that we talk about this trip the less safe we both feel.. Please replay with detail info on how to get around once we get off from the bus terminal in Merida..

Thank you,
Pacoima

This is absolutely straight forward travel and not complicated at all. There is a direct bus from Cancun to Merida - with stop in Chichen Itza BTW. And in Merida you can take a bus at the old bus terminal to Uxmal.

Here is an English text about this travel:

http://gorp.away.com/gorp/location/latamer/mexico/rutapuuc4.htm

"Catch a Ruta Puuc excursion from the city of Merida. Buses depart the old Terminal de Autobuses at 8 a.m. for about $5 USD."

The Puuc route is a route along more Mayan ruins, not just Uxmal.

If you want to see more places than just Uxmal it would be well worth to rent a car for the day. You could visit the places at your own pace and also stop in remote villages. This would give you a very authentic impression of Yucantan.

Do not be afraid! This is the safest part of Mexico and safer than many other parts of North America. The only thing you have to fear is the heat! It is very hot in July so always have water on hand. If you need / want private transportation that can be arranged as well.

Enjoy the trip!

Merida is fine regarding safety.

Visiting Uxmal is pretty neat. One of my favorites in the area.
The bilingual skill is helpful. Not knowing much wouldn't be a problem at all, I have seen many people going through that area without picking the most basic word.

You can either hire a travel agency tour in the city, catch the tour bus early from the bus terminal or put together your own trip.

If you are coming by bus from Cancun you are probably at the terminar next to the Fiesta Americana Hotel. You can ask right there for trips to Uxmal, I can't really remember if they have them available. Make sure you know the last ride back to the city.

If you spend the night in Merida, you can take one of the bus rides that take you to Uxmal and the nearby sites. They leave early from the CAME bus station a little bit south of the very heart of downtown. Make sure you get a city map.

If you are late for the tour bus, buy a ticket for Uxmal arqueology site only. The bus will drop you almost at the very entrance. If I remember this correctly, you might want to make sure you know where and what time to take your bus back to the city.

I used yucatantoday.com for that purpuse when I lived there. Also, you can try yolisto.com to confirm really quickly with the folks who live nearby.

Good luck and enjoy the place!
