Luggage dilemma Bangkok to Chiang Mai train Posted: Mon June 29, 2009 10:36 PM UTC
Hi, I am looking at the first class sleeper from bkk to chiang mai in August.
We have 3 weeks worth of luggage and suitcases with us, does anyone know if the luggage can come into the 1st class sleeper cabins?
Also will Chiang Mai be wet in Augusst?!
thanks all

The times I went to Chiang Mai by sleeper train it was 2nd class and I kept my bag with me. Here is a Seat 61 link which shows a first class car with a tourist reclining, his bags are nearby.

It's your room, I don't expect you will have to keep your bags separate and everyone else in lower classes keep their stuff closer to them. Even when I used second class normal seating there were racks overhead for baggage.
In any event keep your passport, laptop, money, jewelry, odd valuables, medicines and snacks always on your person or within sight no matter if anyone tells you to store them in an out of sight location. This happens on buses sometimes, I always have a smaller bag with my "definitely don't want to loose" stuff that never leaves my keep.
Everything will work out okay.

The Seat 61 link also has some video clips too.

During your trip you will have opportunities to wash clothes, you can probably get by with two bags apiece. You can put off buying souvenirs to bring home until the very last of your trip. Your hotel in Bangkok can also store unneeded stuff for you if you want, when you return to Bangkok you just reclaim your items. This is good for tourists who come from cold countries during winter months.

I took the 2nd class sleeper last year from chiangmai to bkk, i only have 1 luggage and can be kept under the seats/bed, for 1st class you will be having bigger private space for your luggages, so no worry. chiangmai can be wet in august, yes until september there can be more rain than the rest of the year, but normally lasts for couple of hours. have fun!

Hi
We've used the first class sleeper several times and you can indeed keep your luggage in your cabin.
You have 2 beds above eachother, a small washing bassin and a small table and that's it. Of course you can store some suitcases in the cabin, but I wouldn't take too much, as the cabins are quite small.
We were over there for 1 month and had 1 suitcase per person. That went ok in the cabins, together with some other small bags we carried. We had the laundry done several times. You can have it done in the hotels or just in some laundrettes (is this the correct word?) you can find everywhere. It hardly costs anything and it saves quite a lot on packing.
Or do as Hal says : leave some of the luggage in the hotel in Bkk.
I have to say : don't try the food on the train ! We ordered breakfast once and it was terrible !
Toilets/shower are shared for all the first class passengers, but were quite clean. The cabin itself was also clean each time we used one.
