California Help in the Redwoods!
Posted: Mon June 29, 2009 05:46 PM UTC
We are traveling to California next week and will be spending a couple of days on the northern coast with the intention of seeing the Redwoods. Traveling from Redding over to the coast - any advice on where to stay or not to stay? Arcata area? Eureka? Does anyone know of some nice little place along the coast close to the Redwoods?

I recall going to Ferndale which is closer to the Redwoods of Humboldt County than Eureka. A really quaint place. Did not stay but it offers some accommodation. Found this when searching: http://www.shawhouse.com/inn/inn.html

if you come back to San Fran, the Muir Woods just north of the Golden Gate Bridge is a nice grove of trees and very accessible

Ferndale would also be one of my top two my choice's. This quaint town is filled with Victorian architecture. Trinidad is another great choice and has a B&B overlooking Trinidad Bay. http://www.trinidadbaybnb.com

Another vote for Ferndale. If that does not work then Eureka is a good place with plenty of options.

I agree with the previous posts regarding Ferndale or Trinidad. Ferndale is known for its Victoriam archtecture with a number of B&B's. Trinidad is a small town also with B&B's and more rustic accomodations. Arcata is a college town (Humboldt State) and has more night life, where I would opt to stay at the Arcata Inn on Arcata Square. Eureka is the largest City on the North Coast, where I would recommend the historic Eureka Inn. Another option is the Benbow Inn located south of Eureka near Garberville. You'll find lots of Redwoods there.
