http://www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-train/horaires

will give you train times and fares. It's in French, but easy to work out. Journey time is around 2.5 hours, one-way fare from 28.50 euro.

There may be a bus as well (probably cheaper), but I haven't managed to track down timetables yet.

Take a look at http://www.transports.var.fr which is the main portal for bus routes in VAR. I found a direct bus from Nice to Marseille at: http://tinyurl.com/nh5avx
or this is the long URL. Up to you to discover the cost. Takes 3 hours on the fastest one from Nice - Gare Routière to Marseille - Gare Routière - Saint Charles . Get the fare for this Line 42 on the Tarification page. Seems to be €28 or €18 for under 26 or seniors.

For the extra 50 cents I'd go by train. :-)

For my 2 cents worth so would I, and by the way it's not an extra 50 cents in every rail option. What is disappointing is the cost of the bus shuttle from Marseille to the airport. €8.50 !
Maybe there is a better way from Nice to Marseille airport. Perhaps taking a bus to Aix then transfer to the airport connection?

But for that bus (which I found and discarded as a possibility) the OP would have to get to Nice airport first, yes?

So the bus line 42 goes first to Aix then on to Marseille after 30 minutes. Then you need to take the bus to the airport costing €8.50.
Unfortunately the cost from Nice to Aix appears to be the same as Nice to Marseille.
Plan foiled.
BUT. The cost of a regular bus from Aix to the airport costs €7.80
A full 70 cents saving.
Accumulated saving so far by bus: 70 cents plus a minimum of 50 cents if taking the TER. Or much more if taking the alternatives.
And anyway AIX is a nicer place.

My 'hunch' is that Pedro's bus from the airport is the same bus that starts at Nice bus station.......

we are back to the beginning.
But my favourite is via AIX.

depends by the poster says "we will be in Nice this weekend" do they come in thru the airport? If not, from the bus station in Nice to the airport is an easy ride on bus 98.

you can also verify exact your destination by writing the source bus company, thats what I do in France when outside my area rather than internet.

Hi All

Thanks for the replies so far, we are flying into Nice on Easyjet and flying out of Marseille on Ryanair,

So As I gather, its better to take the train from Nice and will have to take another bus to the airport in Marseille?

Thanks

Pedro- the original question was about being in Nice during this weekend not the airport. Then getting to Marseille Airport for the Ryanair flight.
I still think that my idea of getting from Nice bus terminal to Marseille Airport VIA Aix is FABULOUS.
The GARE ROUTIERE or bus station in Nice is at this address:
16 Boulevard Jean Jaures, Nice, France
Copy & paste this into Google Maps and you can see that it is close to the sea road and the older quarter of Nice. Whereas the railway station is further inland.
I suppose if I was staying near the rail station in Nice then I may consider taking the train but I may decide to get to Aix early then look around this lovely old town again. Home of Paul Cezanne. Very Provenceale and charming. The rail or bus station in Aix are only a few minutes walk to the centre of Aix.
Look for some more info about Aix in VT

got it Nige, thats what happened when you finish varnish your house wood and inhale that stuff ::)

If the OP is in the city of NIce, then going to the Gare routiére will be able to catch a bus to Marseille, which still will allow to see more of the country, and towns along the way. there are regular buses with the bus company LER.The one Nige says goes thru Aix, yes indeed.

Hey Pedro - glue sniffing again? Just stick to the Beaujolais.
yes my current favourite journey from Nice 'downtown' to Marseille Airport is first to take the bus over to Aix - if you take the 09.45 one you should get to Aix by 12.15. Depending on your return flight time (maybe late evening?) you have some time to explore Aix. Lunch in Aix.
You can take the Aix to Marseille Airport bus from near where you arrived. They go every 30 minutes and cost is €7.80 - total cost is €28.50 + 7.80 = €36.30
Can anybody beat that price?
Alternatively I may spend a little more and catch the fast TGV from Nice to Aix and enjoy the town before the rigours of Ryanair.

Yes if he gets the 08.37 one. The TER one. But its €31.50 for the flashy others. AND then you have to add the cost of the Marseille to airport bus - an extortionate €8.50
I make that more expensive. Anyway its more about not going into Marseille city if you can avoid it. Much prefer AIX.
