Question Posted By: Replies:
Ratings...

Why is the number of ratings for you is different in your pop-up box than in your ratings history for the week? I mean, VERY different - much more in the pop-up box. I just noticed this a couple of weeks ago when I clicked on "Ratings for You" in the pop-up box to see which tips had been rated.

Has happened to me quite a lot, at various times.

Possible reasons:

Tips added to travel planners do not get rated twice.

Don't think negative ratings show on the final total.

Will try to find the thead where this was discussed fairly recently.......

Thanks for the link Leics - unfortunately this still makes no sense at all to me. I particularly don't understand that part about the travel planners, but I'm not going to worry about it. Was just curious to find out if there was any logical reason to this. Doesn't seem to be anything logical about the whole ratings system anyway.

It is very simple:
someone reads a page and clicks on one of the 5 options for "was this tip helpful" = rating AND it gets counted in the ratings history,
someone selects tip for trip planner = appears as rating on the console in the list of "ratings for you", but NOT on the ratings history.
So the pop-up box aka notices console will mostly have MORE ratings than the history.

Why this is so and how ratings and ranks are calculated - this will forever remain a mystery and it is good that way :-)

Absolutely agree, Ingrid. I am very happy for the whole ratings thing to remain a mystery, even when my ratings and console do not tally! :-)

I agree with both of you. I just only noticed this and was curious. I enjoy receiving a nice comment from someone (epsecially those that lead to a friendship) more than an anonymous tip. And I really don't put much stock in the ratings system here based on some of the really bad highly rated tips. :-) But I have to say Ingrid that I am extremely surprised that so many people use the travel planners - at least enough to justify the huge differences in the 2 numbers. (I've only used it once, but did not like the printing part.) Anyway, thanks for clearing things up for me.

One more piece of information: ratings for answers in the forum do not appear in our rating history.

I use the travel planner very often and not only for my own trips. Recently I collected some tips for New York for a colleague who wants to go there, I used it for my upcoming Sweden trip and I even had to do it twice (= collect, save, delete and continue) because I had more than the 250 tips per session.

There's also the note about tips on accommodation being multiplied by 10. I wonder if they can affect the tip rating that shows on the notices window?

I don't think it would show up as extra ratings when that happens......I've had ratings for that type of hotels and the rating just appeared once. I assume there is some sort of calculation x 10 when that week's ratings are worked out (probably embedded in the coding for that particular tip).
