Buenos Aires WHat to see in and around Buenos Aires
Posted: Sun June 28, 2009 10:37 AM UTC
MY wife and I will be in Buenos Aires for a few days in August. We are looking for suggestions as to a good place to stay (comfortable, not too expensive, convenient to transportation and major tourist attactsions) as well as worthwhile things to see in the city and nearby. We are mostly intersted in cultural things, not beaches.

If you type Buenos Aires into the Search box at the top of the page, it will take you to the BA pages written by VT members. You'll find a whole range of suggestions there of places to go; things to see and do; where to stay, shop and eat (with an indication of prices); how to get around the city - a virtual guidebook of all the city has to offer. BA's a fantastic city, you'll have a great time there. Reading the pages written by VT members will give you a good feel for =the place as well as loads of ideas for your holiday.

Check the tourist board site. There is a group of local citizens that offer free tours similar to Big Apple Greeters in NYC, I think it is called Cicerones. Try searching that word.

And, go to La Boca where you can walk around then get something to eat at the place at the end of the street by the water and they have tango dancing, etc. - you can sit there for hours just watching.

The Evita Musuem is good.

Have fun.

If you are there on a Sunday the Feria de Mataderos is very much worth the hour's trip out to this area of the city. I have more info on it on my BsAs page.

Good thing you are not interested in beaches since you will be visiting at the end of winter and beach weather it is not. You will still find the weather is a bit chilly and most likely a bit damp.

Not certain what "not too expensive" means, but your best choice might be booking an apartment. You will find most of the major tourist attractions (Casa Rosada, etc) in the central city area but I would not recommend that as a place to stay. It is very busy during the daytime but tends to get rather empty at night. The Recoleta and the part of Palermo that adjoins the Recoleta are fairly central and make it easy to reach most of the city via public transport.

The Art Suites apartment hotel is a decent choice in the Recoleta, as would be Art Hotel, The Bel Air and The Concord Callao another apartment hotel. All would be in the $usd a night range.

As for visiting surrounding areas, a ferry ride across the Rio de la Plata to Colonia would be a nice day trip, as well as a visit to San Antonio de Areco, just copy and paste this link to your browser for more information

Hope this helps get you started and have a great visit

A good place to visit in Buenos Aires is Recoleta, as it has many cultural sights to see including the Recoleta Cemetery where Evita is buried. As for accommodations in BA, check out Hotel Plaza Francia - though I'm not sure if this fits your description of a "not too expensive" place to stay.
