I'm visiting in the final week of August for 20days. Any suggestions about what I should include in an itinerary?

hmmm, August is at the peak of rainy season and many minor roads cannot be used; last year they had floods even in some parts of Vientiane province.
Anyway, try with Pakse, Thakhek, Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Luang Nam Tha. There are plenty of things to do there; when it's dry you can rent bycicle or motorbike and explore the area; if situation permits and is safe, see one of waterfalls (near Luang Prabang or Paxse or Mekong falls); when it rainy you can see temples, sip coffee or beer, visit markets, museums and that kind of stuff... hope that helps. Enjoy Laos!!

In addition to the above, you should also try & spend some time around Si Phan Don (four thousand islands) and on the way there (south of Pakse), go & see Wat Phu Champasak.
