Nice Place to Stay - out of Town Posted: Fri June 26, 2009 07:27 AM UTC
Hi there.
Im looking for a nice place to stay in the Algarve, or anywhere eles at the south-coast of Portugal.
We are by car, therefore we are looking for a very special place out of Tourist centers.
Do you know a nice place at the Beach with hotel or camping?
Thank You,
Thomas from Switzerland

You could concentrate your search around the area east of Faro to the Spanish border at Villa Real de Santo Antonio. But that tip was passed on to me a good couple of years ago - I see golfing holidays advertised there now.
I suspect there are very few places left that are not tourist centres. You could beat the crowds by choosing to visit outside mid-July to early September which is High Season.
Neighbours own an apartment in Lagos (western coast) and tell me that the area out to Cabo de San Vincente is well worth exploring.

there is a small village called salema situated between lagos and sagres and the tourism there is still fairly limited and it´s a pretty little place.

Tourism in the Algarve has ups and downs. This year, it seems that the whole world wants to come to Lisbon. The Algarve by contrast is being left empty. I read in papers that some hotels there are sacking people because of the relative lack of tourists.
It's a pity because the beaches there are the best in Portugal (maybe the best in Europe).
I mean with this that even in touristy places, it might be relatively empty and with lower prices.
If you have a car, which is good in the Algarve, you can run all the coast and search for the best places there.
My sugestions:
- Tavira Island (has camping. try to leave the car in a parking in the mainland)
- Touristy Albufeira (if it's low in tourists it can be cheaper)
- Portimão (not just tourists there. Relatively large town with shops and a sardine harbor)
- Lagos (touristy, nevertheless there is plenty of space around with less crowded beaches)
- Sagres (begining of the west coast. Beautiful)
- Beaches at the west cost (some are difficult to access. not many people there. Unique scenery)
If you have time, you can visit all of these places in a trip.
