I would check the Austin Chronicle's Web site, www.austinchronicle.com, to see if anything special is going on the day you're going to be there. Zilker Park (where Barton Springs is located) is lovely, but I'm not really an outdoorsy type so I don't really know where the hiking trails and all that are. When I'm not deployed, I live about an hour north in Killeen, so when I'm in Austin during the day it's usually to go to either one of the malls, South Congress or the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (which I believe they have a property in San An, so you might not want to spend your time in Austin doing that).

Have fun!
