Class on a budget Posted: Thu June 25, 2009 08:42 PM UTC
It's my friends hen do and we're heading for what we hope will be a "classy and mature" weekend in Nice. I'm currently trawling through the Nice pages on VT to try to find recommendations for hotels which are in the average price bracket, but a little bit special. No luck yet. If anyone has any suggestions they would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks, Jules

VT will give you an idea of some of the hotels and what they are like. Plus many hotels that you can not book on Venere, or some of the other internet booking agencies. However, once I find the area I want to stay in, I check them out on Venere.com and tripadvisor.com. Again, the downside is that many hotels don't sign up with these agencies so you don't have a complete list of hotels. Also check the Nice Tourisme where they list out several hundred hotels. Areas, pics, etc., select a few potentials and then see if VT'r have posted tips or ask directly. http://www.niceres.com/4DACTION/Web_GP_Resa/GB

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have checked out the various hotel booking websites, but it's pretty time consuming. I know VT can help, and I am still trawling through the hundreds of tips. I'm not being lazy and asking people to search for me, I'm happy to do that, but if anyone knows of somewhere that fits the description it would really help :)

Regence ? Mainly because it reminds me of Negresco if you were dark sunglasses. And is near plenty of action.

After I posted I saw that you were well versed in this. I wish I could be more specific help, but I have not been to Nice in years. Good luck,

Have a look at Le Vendome, rue Pastorelli. We use it for family overspill- its very centrally located in a good street and has French style rather than hotel-chain-could-be-anywhere. Its three star but reasonable for that

Two hotels I have never staid in, but which have very good locations:
1. Hotel Suisse, right at the end of the Promenade des Anglais.
2. Mercure Marche aux Fleurs, on the Promenade des Anglais, next door to the Opera.

JulesH,
You can rent a flat - may have no lift, but that's what makes it special.
Hotel Vendome is very central, cafes and shops and nightlife around.
Suisse is closer to the port with the chateau above it and the sea right accross the road - the beach is the least populated in the city, for all I know, while the road is just the opposite.
You can take a map and choose depending on what you are planning to do.

P.S.
Residence Beau Rivage on the Promenade – never stayed there, but Matisse and Chekhov did.
Opposite the most popular beach, must be crowded in summer.
Hotel Oasis – British-operated, as far as I know.
Typical – or what one expects to be typically British, tea and silver milk-pots.
Quiet, guests' average age 80.
Safe, walled and gated, you have to know the code word to get in and take pictures.
Chekhov lived there, too – in 1890s the place belonged to a Russian lady who could make a very good borsch cheaply. Don’t worry about flocks of literature-obsessed tourists, there are none these days.

ooh...suggestion of a flat/apartment is a great one! Didn't realise short lets would be available in August, but apparently so (although there is a minimum of 3 days and we're only there for 2...never mind, we don't mind covering the extra between the 8 of us!) Most of the hotels seem to be full or almost full so won't be able to accomodate all of us anyway...so apartment it is :)
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions!
Jules xx
