State of Tasmania 10 Days - what to do
Posted: Thu June 25, 2009 08:30 PM UTC
Arriving in Hobart from Auckland via Melbourne late on 10 Feb. Got 10 nights to see as much as possible of the island. Leaving on early flight on 20 Feb. How far is the airport from downtown Hobart, or should we book an airport hotel? Any recs for a reliable car rental co? Is it easy enough to pick up accomm on the hoof?

If you are interested, I have the outline of a two week road trip around Tasmania done in Feb'03 posted in a travelogue here:

Other than initial accom on Launceston & in Hobart, no accom was pre-booked...no problems encountered finding reasonable motel style places.
to & from the airport dot com will give you info on just that...well worth bookmarking for other places:

When I flew into Hobart, I rented a car so didn't need to worry about airport transportation at first but once I got the car, I actually headed away from Hobart starting out on my road trip and then had it end in Hobart. Once in town, I didn't really need the car any longer so I returned it to the airport and then took the "Tiger Bus" into town. It drops you off at certain hotels and there are also stops on major streets, like a city bus. It's been a few years so I don't remember exactly how much it cost but it was very reasonable.

After a couple days in Hobart, I then used the Tiger Bus to get back to the airport. I called the company ahead of time and they picked me up at the time I requested at one of their street stops that was less than a block from my hotel. It was very convenient. It's quite a distance from town to the airport so I imagine a cab could be fairly expensive.

Good advice from the others.
Remember that if you rent from the airport there are extra changes.
It could be cheaper to get the bus into town and then hire.

Tassie will be lovely in Feb, should be nice and warm. Beautiful beaches, seafood and very friendly people. With the time you have you will be able to see heaps of Tasmania.

Accommodation on the hoof shouldn't be a major problem but I would check ahead as the tourist season in Tassie has extended from 4 months to 8 months and a lot more grey nomads such as myself go down there these days.
With only 10 days might I boldly caution you not to try and see too much as in terms of the island.
Driving from one place to another can consume heaps of time that would be better spent viewing other attractions.
I would tend to concentrate on the east and north with the time you have but you can read all about your options in my pages. I've been lucky enough to have had four trips down there.
It's easy getting from the airport to the city as it is in most places in the world. I'm not even sure if they have an airport motel - it's not that big a city remember.
Cheers

I agree with not trying to cram too much into 10 days, the driving is time consuming and roads fairly busy. I would book any Hobart accommodation ahead of time as it is popular and when i went there on a weekend I was forced to use an expensive hotel as everything was full. I recommend the Old Woolstores apartments.
Traffic in the centre of both Hobart and Launceston is one way, if a GPS is possible with the car I would get one. And no, there are not any airport Motels, the airport is actually out in the countryside, the first time I went there I was convinced I was going the wrong way.

Thanks for the answers. Yes there is an airport hotel now (fairly new) and we've booked the night of 10 Feb, picking up a Thrifty rental car the next morning (booked via Britz at a huge discount). On the way back we've booked the same hotel for one night and will visit the city on the Tiger bus after leaving our baage at the hotel. This way we save 2 days' car rental! The rest of the trip we'll make up as we go along, noting advice re road conditions and journey times.
