Arrange the excurion through the cruise ship. It will guarantee you timely transportation and if you did (God forbid) miss the baot they would have to get you to the boat on their money since it was a cruise ship booked excusrion.

We took a train from Villefranche to Nice, I can't say it was the best part of that trip, I enjoyed Eze more and I wish we had gone to Monaco instead of Nice, if nothing else to say that I had been there. The train station was within walking distance of the boat docks. Our stop in that port was pretty long, we had time to walk to Eze (uphill, wouldn't recommend unless you are trying to take some of your cruise weight off!), walk back down and take a train to Nice for a couple hours.

Have a look at the boards on www.cruisecritic.com, there are a lot of people that are very helpful on how to do cruise ports on your own. No offense to the previous poster, but with the exception of one cruise, we've never done a ship tour and we've never been left behind. If for some reason the trains stop running, you can always find a cab (for a price) to get you back to the ship, we've never had to do that and we always make sure we have plenty of time to get back.

just got back from there - the train runs every 20 minutes during the day - VilleFranche is fine, but the ship there, it gets real crowded -

Nice is a big city - walk the beach and see the old town

you may want to train the opposite direction - Beaulieu sur mer is a nice town - then go walk around Cap Ferrat - then on to Monaco

Eze is a wonderful place too - once in Baeulieu, take a taxi up to the old midevil city - the hike from the train station in Eze would take you 1.5 hours, then you could take a taxi back to the ship port

enjoy!

If you do take the train from Villefrance to Nice be aware that there are three stations, Nice Riquier, Nice Ville then Nice St Augustin. Get off at Nice Ville, turn left outside the station and at the next junction is the new tramway system which costs 1 euro to use. This will take you around in a loop of a part of the city. I would also suggest taking the open top tour bus which gives you a good idea of the history of the city.
