i seem to remember reading that in some places in the world trains are put on ferries and transferred

mostly the passengers get off - but sometimes they don't

i have a funny feeling that some bus companies put the buses onto the inter island ferry - and the passengers get off for the duration of the sailing then get back on again

There is only an undersea power cable from the North to the South Island ;-)

But seriously:

If you book a package on the TranzCoastal train (Picton - Christchurch and vice-versa), the cost for the ferry (Interislander) is included.

No there isn't but the ferry is really quite quick and easy and a lovely ride.

Have fun :-)

P.S for those laughing at this question...why?! Would you think someone was silly if they asked if there was a train from England to France?!?! A few years back, you would have.
