Croatia 2 Questions - Money and Ferries
Posted: Thu June 25, 2009 08:52 AM UTC
Due to a cock-up by the bank I will be going to Supetar with half my money in British pounds. Can anyone tell me what would be the best way to convert to Kuna's. I know the airport would be worse. So I assume my options are Bureau de Change or Banks. Any others?

Also, I imagine we'll be taking quite a few trip on the ferry between Supetar and Split. Is there weekly discounted ticket and would it be worth it?

Thanks very much... only 2 days left.. we're really looking forward to it

Thanks
Steve

Yes I remember changing money in Croatia poses least problems.

I was in Croatia in Jan 2009.

Most banks post the exchange rates, and they give good exchange rates and do not charge commission. But you can double-check just in case.

Changing Pounds into Kunas should be no problem. Both banks and exchange offices (=Mjenjacnica, plenty of them around) use well displayed "Buy" and "Sell" rates, with no extra commission. (If there is a commission at an exchange office - do not use it and simply go to the nearest bank. There is a bank at the Split Airport and it is perfectly safe to use it as well).

You can also use ATMs.

Note that at the end of your trip you might have troubles converting Kunas back to Pounds simply because it is not most frequently used currency and some places might be short of Pounds. (You will have no troubles converting Kunas to Euros.) If you want Pounds, the best thing is to go to a bank a day before you leave and if they don't have Pounds at that moment ask them to order them for the following day.

Re. ferries - as far as I know, there is no discount card. (Local people have big discounts when they show their ID card with an address on the island, others pay the full price no matter whether they are from Split, Zagreb or London).
