South Korea end of july - best place to go in korea, not as crowded/hot?
Posted: Tue June 23, 2009 07:18 AM UTC
So, I'm teaching in Korea now (hour south of Seoul) and I might end up just traveling to somewhere in Korea for summer break, which is about a week end of July.

So, does anyone have any suggestions of some good places to visit then? I am hoping to find somewhere that may not be overrun with people and/or with the icky humid heat, if that is even possible?

Some possible contenders were: along the east coast beaches (Sokcho, Samcheok), Ulleungdo, the south coast islands (Oedo, Geojedo, Namhae, Hongdo?), or maybe even Jeju.

Any other suggestions?

Do you want to go hiking in the mountains or be lazy along the beaches?

The east coast beaches are nice, but they are really flat and the water is very calm. Unless you go with people, you will find it very boring.

Boryeong is hosting the Mud Festival July 11~19. That's a party zoo full of foreigners.

Geojedo, Namhae, Jinhae and the south coast is quite picturesque. Geoje and/or Jeju is probably the most tourist friendly for people who do not have their own transportation.

Refine the parameters of what you are looking for and maybe I can help. I've seen lots of various places in this little peninsula and written several pages on them.

Dave is correct, but you can also check some of my pages. Glad you didn't mention Hyundae Beach in Busan as it will be a sea of humanity in the summer. If you are truly looking for a quiet laid back place that won't be overrun with people (no foreigners either) you may want to try Malipo Beach area on the west coast...there are even real log cabins for rent in the pine forest. Much farther down the southwestern coast, you will find Mokpo..big fishing area and almost no tourists, but the people are friendly and if you like seafood, you will find none better. If you really want to get off the beaten path you may want to try camping and trout fishing in the mountains. I liked Woraksan myself. If you don't have your own transportation, the easiest of the three to get to is Mokpo.

Could try something fun, and learn how to scuba dive?

Class is 2 days in Seoul, and then a couple days at the eastcoast sea for checkout and completion.

Let me know if you're interested, and I'll give you info on who to talk to.
