Apartment in Brooklyn , Nassau Ave Posted: Mon June 22, 2009 11:24 AM UTC
Hi !
I´m going to New York the last week in August.
I saw an apartment in Brooklyn, the address is Nassau Ave with Leonard St, it´s close the station Nassau Ave. Please, I want to ask if the place is sure in the night or not.How long does it take from station Nassau Ave until Manhatan ?
The other option is in Harlem, west 123, between 7º and 8º Av.
What´s your opinion ?
Thanks
Victor

leonard and nassau is in greenpoint brooklyn, a neighborhood traditionally described as Polish. Reasonably safe, low rise buildings, one block from the G subway train. The biggest problem is that you will have to take two subways just to get to manhattan, much less convenient than harlem. The biggest plus is that you will see a side of new york most visitors do not. this is very doable.

As between the two, Nassau Ave is preferable. Now, I haven[t driven past Nassau St lately, but I recall that Nassau Ave is in an industrial neighborhood that had been gentrified into a desirable, residential area. It's congested with heavy truck and commercial traffic.

Hi,
Thank you for your nice answers.
Please,What´s your opinion about the apartment in Harlem, west 123,between 7º and 8º ? It´s cheaper than the Brooklyn apartment.
Is a dangerous neighbourhood at night to return in subway, stop suway 125 ?, is it very far in metro to Manhatan ?
Thank you.

Where are you finding these apartments? Do you know that short-term apt. rentals are mostly illegal in New York? In addition, there are a lot of scams out there, particularly on sites like craigslist and VRBO, neither of which vet the apartments they list. Don't be a victim, you could end up with no place to stay and no way to get your money back!
You should be looking at apartment style hotels. The most popular are the Affinia Group, which has several locations, Radio City Apts., Jack & Judy's B&B (like apartments, but legal!), the Salisbury Hotel, Beacon Hotel, and others.
