First time in Europe Posted: Sun June 21, 2009 04:47 AM UTC
Hello :)
On Aug 4th I am flying to Munich and this will be my first trip to Europe. My mom and I are going.
I was just wondering if any of you wonderful people may have some tips on cheap trips we can take. I would love to take at least one day trip to other cities, but cost will of course be a factor.
Any tips about this that as well as any other useful info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much for you time!
Happy travelling!
:)

I would say that if you are in Munich, you should try to make trip out to see Ludwig II's folly castle of Neuschwanstein, yes it is on the tourist track, but it is so for a reason.
You might also want to take day trip out to the Alps. I remember being very impressed with the trek up the Zugspitz.h

What are your interests? Can you define "cheap"? How long are you staying in Munich?
For a start, you can type Bavaria in the search box and you'll see lots of Bavaria tips, which will give you some ideas.
If you plan to go hiking, the mountains are close to Munich and easy to reach by public transportation. Or are you going to rent a car?

welcome to vt and hope you will enjoy your trip to bavaria.
i agree with chet that Neuschwanstein is a very good day trip.
especially for north americans who don't have a castle in every backyard like we do in europe.
i would certainly say that heading south from munich is the most scenic as you start hitting the alps then.
a trip to salzbuerg is a bit long, but salzburg comes pretty close to being the most romantic city in europe, so you might wanna cnsider it.
i would take an overnight stay there though if i was to go.

You will find that organising your own transport for daytrips etc is much cheaper than taking organised day tours.
Travelling by train or local bus in Germany is safe, comfortable and easy.
You can find train times, details and fares in English here:
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml
You do not need to book in advance online.
The official tourist information website has details of local transport:
http://www.muenchen.de/home/60093/Homepage.html
Salzburg is an easy train ride from Munich.

In addition to some of the great suggestions above, I would suggest Rothenburg ob der Tauber which dates back to the 12th century. Neuschwanstein Castle also gets my vote. Enjoy Bavaria!

In Bavaria, where do you begin? Of course, the first trip anyone thinks of is to see the Castles just outside of Fuessen in the south, but you could also go north to Bamberg, Regensburg or Nuremburg. I have done a lot of research into Bamberg in preparation for my visit there in September and I simply can't wait to get there. There are some fabulous churches, cathedrals and historic buildings in Bamberg, most notable of which seems to be the Alte Rathaus which is built on a man-made island in the middle of the river. I also hear that there are many breweries there all offering really first rate beer if that is your thing. Where you eventually choose of course, should depend on your likes and dislikes and what you want to see and do on your day trip. Bamberg is a 2 hour train trip from Munich and you can get a Laender ticket for up to 5 people all for 28 Euro or if you're travelling alone it will cost you 20 Euro. This can be used from midnight to 3am the following day (27 hours in all), so you can go anywhere you like so long as it is in Bavaria. Have a wonderful time.

Have a nice time in this wonderful region.
The German railways - Deutsche Bahn has a ticket called Bayern ticket for 28 euros up to five people can travel for the whole day (after 9 am on weekdays) in all regional (red) trains and busses in the whole province. This thing is perfect for day trips. You can go to Salzburg and back one day, Neuschwanstein and back another day and Rothenburg or Nuremberg another day. Personally I would recommend Salzburg - it is one of the greatest cities in central Europe and has a great old center and a magnifficent castle.
