Hello
Tickets are not valid for trains. There are some monthly or longer valid passes which are valid for trains goes close to budapest.
But tickets, tourist tickets and 3 day passes are not valid.
Budapestien, Tamáa

Sorry!
I missread your question. I red trains instead of tram...
For trams and buses all tickets are valid (daily, 3 day, 7 day).
Sorry again, Tamás

not so - 3 day card also valid on trains within certain city limits - this from the bkv website:
"Valid for 72 hours from the indicated date and time (month, day, hour, minute) for an unlimited number of trips on buses, trams, trolleybuses, on metro, underground, cogwheel-railway on the whole length of the line but on suburban railway (HÉV) only within the administrative boundaries of Budapest. You can buy it in advance. It is not returnable after the beginning of validity. The travel card has to be presented for controller's request."

glad to read this as I did use the train for one stop on Sunday :-)

Re: Do metro tickets work on trams Posted: Tue June 23, 2009 03:43 PM UTC
IF you mean suburban railway (HÉV)/this is the green one/ it is operated by budapestian transportation company (BKV). There are four main lines to places really close to budapest (Szentendre, Gödöllő, Csepel, Ráckeve). Most of theese lines stations are inside budapest borders.
Classic train (operated by Hungarian Railways MÁV) which goes from three different railway stations (Déli, Keleti, Nyugati) can not be used with BKV tickets.
So if you used the green-white suburban railway to theese lines within budapest border you did it right.

I just want to know if the metro tickets for all day or 3 day tourist tickets are good on the trams and buses. I never mentioned anything about the trains.

Re: Do metro tickets work on trams Posted: Tue June 30, 2009 08:52 PM UTC
Just to make it clearer:
BKV single tickets, 24-hour tickets and 72-hour (tourist) tickets are valid on:
- metro
- trams
- BKV buses (numbered 5-296 and 901-999, mostly blue buses)
- trolleybuses
- HEV suburban railway (green trains)
- cogwheel railway
Single tickets are valid also outside the city limits on buses, but not on the outer part of HEV lines.
The above-mentioned BKV tickets are NOT valid on:
- Volanbusz suburban bus routes (routes numbered 300-800, mostly yellow buses) and routes of bus operators other than BKV
- trains other than HEV suburban railway (this means trains operated by the Hungarian national passenger carrier MAV-Start)
- Szechenyi Hill Childrens' Railway
- the Buda Castle Funicular
- John Hill Chairlift
- river services
- ferries
- Budapest Airport Minibus and other private van/taxi operators.
Transfers in general are NOT free, except for transfers between metro lines.
