Labor Day is a celebration of workers. It also marks the unofficial end of summer. There is usually a parade in NYC down 5th Ave. Stores are open and there are plenty of sales going on. Have a great time!

In the US we have labor unions to protect workers from being abused from their employers. Labor day is like an appreciation day for all those who work at making the economy or community better. Expect a lot of parades and festivals. I find the main labor day parade in Manhattan boring. The more interesting events are the Brazilian Day Parade-in midtown, West Indian Day Festival- Brooklyn, and the Wigstock Festival.
Warning West Indian Day Festival is Wild! A lot of people all over the place it takes place over the entire weekend. Friday is normally the steel band competition. Saturday is the Childrens Carnival Competition. Sunday is a whole bunch of other competitions plus block parties in the street and Monday is the big parade.
Wigstock can be raunchy. Location is not consistent so you have to check the papers or website. This is the drag queen festival.

I would check out the newly opened HighLine, the elevated park that's on Manhattan's West Side. It's a beautiful and relaxing area to stroll in, and you can check out the restaurants just below. Here's a link http://www.thehighline.org/
