Croatia Croatia Must Sees & Off the Beaten Path
Posted: Fri June 19, 2009 03:05 PM UTC
4 friends and I leave next week for Croatia. We are going to Zagreb, Plitvice, Split, and Dubrovnik. Does anyone have an "must sees" in any of these cities. I also always enjoy sites that are off the beaten path and not touristy.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,
I just did the exact trip a couple of years ago. There are some nice castles surrounding Zagreb, Diocletian's Palace in Split is a must see (make sure you go underneath it in the grottoes, and a small town called Trojir is a good side trip from Split. Plitvice is nice too; there are miles of trails to explore. In Dubrovnik make sure you walk around the top of the city walls; everything else can be explored on foot. You can go to the top of the mountain where the big cross is for great views, and you can take ferries to nearby islands. There are plenty of places that are off the beaten path in and around those 4 places. you should also consider going to Korcula town - it's really neat.

don't forget to take a day or two off to visit some of the islands off the coast.
from split you have many ferry connections to several of the islands.

Hi!
Zagreb: Most historical monuments are in the centre and a walking distance from each other. Mirogoj is a bit further but definitely worth a visit and not many tourists do. It's (not just) a cemetery but an open park and a gallery as well. Take the bus No. 106 from the Cathedral (50m past it are the bus stops). Botanical Garden in the Lower town is a nice place for a break in the afternoon. If you're looking for something different to do in the evening try Strossmayer promenade as Strossmartre- a promenade festival- is being held- concerts, movies...and it's free. From Split to Dubrovnik the best way to go is to take a catamaran or ferry and island-hop Split- Hvar- Korcula- Dubrovnik.

Mirogoj of course.

I thought it might be touristy because it is so amazing.

You can also include Varazhdin, 'Croarian barocco town' into your list. It's about 1,5 hour by bus from Zagreb, as far as I remember.
The whole centre is historical monument and there is also very old famous cemetery, as famous as Mirojoy, it's name is 'Varazhdinsko grobje'
