Re: flying to nicosia Posted: Thu June 18, 2009 10:10 PM UTC
I know for a fact that the old Nicosia airport is not a functioning airport. It is actually in the "Green Zone" which buffers Cyprus and the unrecognised Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC). In fact, there are still planes sitting on the ground there that could not take off in 1974 when the war started. You can see it from a distance from some roads in Cyprus thorugh binoculars and it is as interesting as it is sad.
I doubt very much whether that situation will change in the near future, certainly not until Turkey inevitably joins the Federal States of Europe, sorry EU.
If you want to go to Cyprus you can fly into either Larnaca or Pafos (Paphos). I believe there is an international airport in TRNC although, because of it's odd international status, you used to have to go there through Turkey, as it was the only country that flew there. Not entirely sure what the current situation is with that.
Hope this assists,
fergy.
