As far as I am aware Nicosia airport does not function as a general international airport.

and there are no immediate plans to re-open it.

You can fly direct to Larnaca (the nearest airport to Nicosia) from Manchester and Leeds (and other UK airports). www.skyscanner.net will give you carriers.

I know for a fact that the old Nicosia airport is not a functioning airport. It is actually in the "Green Zone" which buffers Cyprus and the unrecognised Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC). In fact, there are still planes sitting on the ground there that could not take off in 1974 when the war started. You can see it from a distance from some roads in Cyprus thorugh binoculars and it is as interesting as it is sad.

I doubt very much whether that situation will change in the near future, certainly not until Turkey inevitably joins the Federal States of Europe, sorry EU.

If you want to go to Cyprus you can fly into either Larnaca or Pafos (Paphos). I believe there is an international airport in TRNC although, because of it's odd international status, you used to have to go there through Turkey, as it was the only country that flew there. Not entirely sure what the current situation is with that.

Hope this assists,

fergy.

As the others have said, Nicosia International airport has been closed since 1974.
As an EU citizen, you can fly to Ercan Airprot (east of Nicosia). Cyprus Turkish Airlines has several flights from UK airports to Ercan which only do a quick touch-down in Istanbul.

However unless you are planning on staying in the north there is no real reason to fly to Ercan as all the hassle of arranging transport and crossing the Green Line will take longer than flying to Larnaca and taking a taxi from there - Nicosia is only 30 minutes from LCA.
