Debating where to stay in Cusco, any help? Posted: Wed June 17, 2009 10:28 PM UTC
Hey, me and my 12 year old son will be traveling to Cuzco this coming August and have three possible places to stay. Since I am not familiarized with the area it would be great to get some feedback
Hotel/Hostal Koyllur (San Blas) - I read many reviews about things being stolen there.
Rey Antares Mystic Hotel (Next to the Cuzco Train Station)- I really like this hotel but they are located right in front of the Mercado San Pedro (Central) - How dangerous is this?
Hotel/Hostal Loreto (Located on the Main Square)- is this more of a backpacker Hostel or am I good with my 12 year old?
I would really appreciate some help before I book any hotel -
Best,
JC

Not familiar with any of these accommodations, so cannot vouch for any of them. As for locations, I think you'll definitely be well-satisfied with staying around the San Blas area of Cusco. It's a nice location and the views of the city are breathtaking from there. From what I've heard, the downtown area close to the market & train station is not a safe area of town. There are many so-called hostels in Cusco that are not your typical hostel, but more of a "homey" B & B type situation. Check further into your accommodation options and see what piques your interest.
Good Luck & Enjoy Beautiful Peru!

My boyfriend went there with his family, my boyfriend's brother had a girl which was 5 years old so they were looking for a safe, cheap place to stay.
After searching a lot they found family lodges which are convenient, they are run by local families and some include breakfast.
There are some around San Blas (typical artisan neighborhood) i don't remember where they stayed but here's a list of them

Also check wikitravel about the do and don't in Cusco (really good tips).

Good luck in your trip.

hi,
we stayed in el balcon located close to the center of town. it was a beautiful property with very pleasant and helpful staff. they serve a nice breakfast as well. it is a nice walk to town center or a short taxi ride. you have to ring the buzzer to have them open the front door. check out their website.
enjoy.

I was in Cusco a few weeks ago and would definitely not stay in the area near the train station. It's possible to walk to the main square from there, but I didn't really feel safe there even during the day. Personally, I wouldn't stay next to the market either. I didn't encounter any issues in the San Blas area so it's the option I would pick out of the three you listed. If it's any help to you, I stayed at Hospedaje Turistico Recoleta. It's just under ten minutes of walking to the main plaza or a 3 sole taxi ride if you prefer. Even as a female traveling alone I felt safe walking alone well into the evening. Have a nice trip and enjoy your time there!

I echo the comment made earlier, do not stay anywhere near the train or bus stations or the market. It is simply not safe. Plaza de Armas/San Blas are both fine.

Thanks to all for your input, I just wanted to play it safe since I am traveling with my son. Staying near the train station or the market is discarded per your recommendations, so we booked a hotel in San Blas (downside is that they are charging $65 per night) - we are only a month away from traveling and we are very excited, again, thank you all for your input.
Best.

Glad you found a resolution to your dilemma. If the price is much too high for you, check your accommodation options again in San Blas. You'll find other accommodations that are well worth it for less than the amount you indicated.
Good Luck & Enjoy Beautiful Peru!
