New York City Accomodation for first timers in New York
Posted: Wed June 17, 2009 06:46 AM UTC
Me and 5 friends from Australia are going to New York for a week at the start of December and want to stay in Manhattan. Can anyone recommend cheap accomodation? and is it better to rent an apartment for a week or hotels? Would be great to be close to all the main attractions or in close taxi or bus ride. Any tips would be great! thanks

hi. WElcome to VT! Have a look at nylofthostel.com. It's a hostel that is Not in Manhattan, but in the very trendy up-and-coming nearby neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, just across the East River. Also check out my homepage for restaurant tips. Enjoy my city!

Hello and welcome to NYC!
Have you ever tried an apartment exchange? I did that through craigslist for an exchange in Paris and it was great.
Or place an ad on craigslist for a rental. (here's one i found http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/sub/1225435148.html)
A lovely neighborhood (where I live), which is also considered Manhattan but is a tiny island on the East River, Roosevelt Island, might be a place you could check out. You could place an ad in the island paper, the Main Street WIRE. Here are some links: http://nyc10044.com/ and http://rooseveltisland360.blogspot.com/
Good luck!

Bed and Breakfast might be cheaper. The website below even has reviews.

http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/Search.aspx?dst=88012&lcn=&cid=12803&cod=12815&nor=1&nog=2

Anything above 72nd street is normally cheaper than the rest of the city.

There's a cute little hotel that I've stayed at on the East side of NYC called the Murray Hill Inn- they have pretty cheap rooms and they're near a lot of the main attractions, like Times Square and the Empire State Building, check out the website and see if you can make reservations! I think it's www.murrayhillinn.com

We have had good results online through Priceline Negotiators. Last year at Christmas we booked a 3 1/2 * hotel in Manhattan, Times Square area, for $70 per night for two people. We were satisified with the hotel and location. This year I am finding a price of $80 per night for 3 1/2 star hotel for October--have not booked it yet but need to do so soon. The cost will probably go up nearer the travel date.
