Sunny Beach or Golden Sands Posted: Tue June 16, 2009 09:04 PM UTC
Hello,
I would like to go to Bulgaria in August with my friend.
I am undecided if to go to Sunny Beach or to Golden Sands.
May anyone tell me the differences and what do you suggest??

You'll find Sunny Beach and Golden Sands very much of a oneness - they're both great beach resorts (and thus a bit overdeveloped). Both have good nightlife, a good range of restaurants and bars. For a less developed resort you might consider Sozopol which is just a little bit less developed, but still has all the above, and the old town is a national heritage site. Or as a total alternative base yourself in Varna or Bourgas and go to the resorts for day trips and that way you get the best of both worlds in that you can combine a city trip with your beach trip.
Whatever your choice, enjoy!

Hi,
I definitely agreee with the statement above.Varna and Bourgas are big cities but you can make day trips, you'll like them.Beside Sozopol I could recommend you Nessebar which is just next to Sunny Beach. But Finally if you insist on Sunny Beach or Golden Sands,go to Golden Sands, for me is better place
Enjoy Bulgarian Black Sea
Bye

Re: Sunny Beach or Golden Sands Posted: Thu June 18, 2009 05:14 AM UTC
The way I saw them briefly last summer, Golden Sands (closer to Varna) was where the Romanian, Russian and other former Soviet Union nationals had chosen to vocation. The resort looked extremely well organized, extremely well-kept and it was a relaxed few hours on the beach and walking around.
The Sunny Beach (closer to Burgas) was packed, no - PACKED, PACKED, PACKED with English-speaking tourists. Hotels there were one over the other and because the beach line is interrupted for much longer, the resort had merged with other resorts like Sveti Vlas and Konstantin i Elena - it's a sprawl of hotels that seemed very much everywhere with no particular order.. and there was garbage and tourists, tourists, toursits - felt very much like a all-you-can drink discotte just walking the main street around 6 pm... And there were also chezlongs all over that endless beach - no place to just put your towel down and go for a swim.. I was disgusted with what they've turned the place into to make the most profit off the tourists - a jungle!
I guess however that if you're into checking the CRAZIEST party zone - the latter would be the ultimate destination...
Wherever you choose to go though - Thanks for not littering! They're slow with picking up all the plastic and other bottles/the garbage in general and many of it ends up in the sea and then is washed up on a beach further south...

Maciek,
when I wrote "and other former Soviet Union nationals" I meant in addition to Romanians and Russians - I in no way consider Romanians having ever been part of the Soviet Union. And sure, I wasn't very clear, but at the same time am startled with how strong your reaction is to my implied ignorance... yeah, you made me reconsider how I express myself, right on for that!
But, please, please rest assured I'm aware of both Romanian as well as Polish nationalistic fervour and find no pleasure in provoking it, let alone having to listen to who did what to either... try surprise me with an instance of Poles' tolerance/ amicability toward Soviets/ Russian for a change, which would indeed be something I would treasure and thank you for - how about that?
Cheers,
Marina

I become a bit angry.I must admit.Sorry if you treat a mispelled by me word rubbish very insulintg. I don't find this word as rude in Polish, however if it sounds like that for you -I deeply regret. And you know yourself that you write your thought in the wrong way.You wrote from US- and I'm a bit fed up with some potential visitors or stupid stereotypes apperance in VT concerning this region of Europe.
About nationalism.
Well how would you react if I wrote about Bulgaria as a part of Osman Empire or Soviet Union?
Let's talk frankly what is an average attitude towards Turkey in Bulgaria (as minimum very suspicious).
BTW.I find Bulgarians as a very friendly and hospitable people (no bad word against them).
Due to my bloody catholic habit (at least I should be as a Pole like that shouldn't I-hahaha) let me quote here (to make my short essay nicer).
Matthew 7:4 "Or how can you say to your brother-Maciek, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in your own eye?
Mind you that I defended Romanians (but also Latvians or other Balts) not Poles.
Am I a nationalist?
Why do you think that Poles are nationalists, or antirussian?
We are for sure against rebuildng any kind of 'Evil Empire'.BTW. Who named it like that first?
Uff- such big effort. At the end: relax take it eaeaeaeasy...... hahaha.

Re: Sunny Beach or Golden Sands Posted: Fri June 19, 2009 02:56 PM UTC
I'm all for freedom of expression, Maciek - 100%!! Have no problems hearing other ppl's opinions if they're that - oinions. So, if you believe Bulgaria is part of the Ottoman Empire or the Soviet Union - say so. I can take it - after all you must have your reasons to say that and I'd love to find those out... why not? Would taht make me a lesser of a person? The answer is no. And I am very relaxed, lol ;-))))
The thing is that we are shaped by the places and cultures we've experienced - mostly those in out chidhoods - but that's not to say, we cannot continue to develop...
And as far as I am concerned - nationalism is a reaction to problems but it is never a solution...
And as to asking me about "average" numbers of nationalists in Bulgaria - well, it would be extreme to pretend I could give you those, but looking at the EU formal election results would be one way to get an idea... those should be available on-line.
"Ataka" is a party based on its hatred toward ROma and other ethnic groups in Bulgaria - it is a relatively new political organization, which I have to say in no way represents MY interests. And, thankfully - doesn't represent "the average" Bulgarian.
"The Movement for Freedoms and RIghts" is the Turksih minority party - it sprung out with the first two other big parties in Bulgaria in 1989 and has always played a role in coalition with the opposition.. I have no problem it its existence!
..Because I AM for openess and inclussion, Maciek and whatever the upbringing and religion, have hard time accepting rethorics that promote the opposite - seperation and hatred, o.k.
Cheers! Marina... ;-))
