Hi all,

I will be travel with my 14 years son to Melbourne for holidays in Mid July. How bad is this flu affected the locals? Is it safe to bring my son for travel at this time?

I was worried that i need to cancel my trip and dissapointed my son. Please let me know the most update news from Melbourne on this outbreak.

Thanks a lot!

I think there has been a lot of hype about the flu in melbourne and all of australia. One of my good friends is a public health worker and she thinks it has been blown way out of proportion. I think you would be crazy to cancel your holiday because of it. There is an element of risk in all aspects of life. Just go for it i say.

I'd like to agree with the previous posters comments. The media will always make something worse that it really is just to sell their papers/TV coverage.

There was TV footage of one of the football games and the camera went to a group of fans all wearing the same style of mask - they had a pigs snout attached to the fronts of the masks and I'd love to buy one as a joke.

Yes there is a flu going around and it happens every year. Seems that it is a mild form, so don't cancel out just come and enjoy yourself.

My personal opinion is that unless your health is compromised this flu is just like any flu. Maybe there is some risk that it will mutate easily .
The bacteria are always ahead of anything we throw at them anyway and though flu is caused by a virus it is usually secondary infection you have to worry about.
To build up the immune system is one answer. We immunize using homeopathic means. You can buy a gel to put in your nostrils. And gargle at the first sign of trouble. The idea being to diminish the strength of the attack.
Take the usual precautions though.
I live in Australia by the way. Marg

i live in melbourne and everything seems to be going on much as usual

people don't seem to be wearing face masks - I don't actually know anyone who has got it - it seems very mild

Swine flu is just flu, nothing more, nothing less.
It's kill ratio is less than "normal flu"
Swine flu is going to be around for another couple of years yet.
At 14 he will be fighting fit and so will you.

Relax and enjoy your holiday.

The advice others have given is quite right. This flu has not been very severe at all. I think only 4 cases in Melbourne have required intensive care. Flu usually kills more than that.
I travel by train and tram everyday and I guess I have been lucky but I still haven't noticed anyone coughing and spluttering on any of trains or trams.
I feel that you can come here with confidence. Still keep an eye on the press but nearer the date we will update you if asked.

on the news tonight it was announced that the security measures have been dropped down a little

for instance schools won't be compulsorily closed down if there are swine flu cases - but people can stay home if they want to

its pretty controlled at the moment. The best decision will be to consult your doctor for precautions. By July the flu would be almost gone

<By July the flu would be almost gone>

No quite correct.
WHO claim the virus will take several years to rid itself, like all other outbreaks.

You will be pleased to know that the common cold is still around. I have had one over the weekend but am right now. All that splutters isn't the flu.
I think this H1N1 will still be around for a while yet and may even kill some people that already have other problems but I think generally healthy people will be OK judging by current situation. I think there has been one death in all of Australia and it was a person with existing problems.
