Info on Sioux Falls to Rapid City leg of aour cross-country driving trip
Posted: Sun June 14, 2009 11:12 PM UTC
Hi,
We are still planning our frequently delayed cross-country drive. I understand that the trip between Sioux Falls and Rapid City SD is looong and boooring. We are not on a timetable and would like some info about interesting(if any)minor detours along this leg of our trip. We are NOT campers, hikers, fishermen, or the usual outdoors type. Please see our home page, or check my previous posting on this forum for more details about our preferences. We will be taking the northern route first.
Thanks, Irv

Mitchell has the Corn Palace, which is kitchy and interesting and a decent-sized place to get out and stretch your legs for a while. Then between there and Rapid City is the Badlands Nat'l Park and just east of the park entrance is the sod house. This is an authentic one and pretty interesting. See my pages about it:

Overall tho, the route isn't that long. You can easily make it in less than day and, figuring in the extra distance to Wisconsin, you could make it in one really long, tiring day if you didn't stop and see anything or 2 shorter rather pleasant days. I wouldn't worry too much about dying of boredom:-)

Hi, this is Wanda from the South Dakota Office of Tourism. In addition to stopping at the Corn Palace and Badlands National Park, you might be interested in checking out Wall Drug, which is sort of a tourist mecca at the edge of the Badlands. You'll find plenty to keep you busy there for a while. There is also the Akta Lakota Museum in Chamberlain, which is a small museum dedicated to the Native American culture of the area. Al's Oasis is also a good place to stop in Chamberlain (well, actually Oacoma...right across the river) for lunch and/or a cup of 5 cent coffee. If you're at all interested in cars, the Pioneer Auto Show in Murdo is really unique. And just west of Murdo on I-90 is the 1880 town, which will give you a taste of what life was like in the late 1800s. I hope these ideas help...if you'd like more information, check out www.TravelSD.com. Enjoy your vacation!!
