Need info between Madison, WI and Sioux Falls, SD Posted: Mon June 15, 2009 12:04 AM UTC
Hi,
We are still planning our frequently delayed cross-country drive. I understand that the trip between Madison WI and Souix Falls SD is looong and boooring. We are not on a timetable and would like some info about interesting(if any)minor detours along this leg of our trip. We are NOT campers, hikers, fishermen, or the usual outdoors type.
Thanks, Irv

I would like to see your definition of looong and boooring. Anyway, two stops along the way you could make would be to explore the town of La Crosse, Wisconsin which is right on Mississippi River. Besides having a 24 year old mayor of a city of 50,000 there are some great Mississippi River vistas and a number of festivals during the summer which could fit into your plans.
The second stop would be to visit the home of Spam in Austin, Minnesota. I've never been there myself but it looks quircky enought to warrant a short visit.

Hi Rich, Thank you very much for your input. It's exactly the type of stuff I need and always got, from my VT friends. We'll certainly check it out as our detailed itinerary comes more into focus. Looong and boooring is any 3 hours without a place to stop, poke around, and take a few pics.BTW I love your home page and your list of likes and dislikes. The're very similiar to our own. Please visit mine. My narrative is not quite as interesting as yours but my page, like my life, is still a work in progress. Irv

I agree La Crosse, WI is a great city to visit. I would suggest getting off at exit 3 from interstate 90 and traveling south into town. Take a right on Main Street for a couple of blocks and you will be in beautiful Riverside Park on the Mississippi River. If you like you can take a ride on a Paddlewheeler and enjoy the spectacular bluffs and perhaps see some eagles. Walk uptown and enjoy an ice cream cone at Pearl Street Ice Cream Parlor. You can also enjoy a very inexpensive but delicious meal at Fayze's on 4th Street (just a couple of blocks from Riverside Park. There is a great childrens museumn on 5th Street. 4th Street north will take you back to I90. As you cross the Mississippi River into Minnesota you could get off at exit 275 and visit the Lock and Dam. Perhaps there will be a barge passing (locking) through when you visit. Be safe and enjoy your trip.

Minneapolis has that outdoor art sculpture museum that is cool.
Viroqua is sort of on the way, in the middle of nowhere. There is an ice cream store there that was just rated one of the best 10 in the country by Forbes Traveler. Sibby's. It's good, really, all organic. http://www.sibbysozone.com/ A bookstore near there has more used books than you can believe. He bought 2 semi trucks of books to get started.
If you take the Interstate 90- up to Minn, take a detour in Osseo (short of Eau Claire) and have a peice of pie at the Norske Nook....I've had many and they are out of this world. The owner went on Letterman one day and made him a couple. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/9aaa5/db09b/
Also near Eau Claire, in Chippewa Falls, is the brewery of Leinenkugel's. It's a local favorite beer. They do tours etc....
Near Baraboo (near Wisconsin Dells) is Dr. Evermore's 'museum'. He makes art out of junk. If you're in Madison, you can see 2 of them, 2 huge birds he made. They are on the east side--211 S Patterson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WHlqGNTQW0
