Cairo Travel Forum

I'll be in Cairo for vacation on July 6-11 before going on business to India, and want to stay in a hostel or budget hotel, preferably in an area with lots of food and people to see and meet. I been to Cairo before but stayed at the Nile Hilton. This time I want to be with other travelers instead of being cooped up in a big hotel. Any recommendations or warnings would be appreciated. Thanks!

Last year I stayed in a place called Wake Up Cairo Hostel. It is not too far from the Nile Hilton on Ramses street. It is on the seventh floor of building number 33. Reviews etc are available on the hostelworld.com website.

There was a common room with great views, internet and the place had good showers. It was quite small (20 guests or so) and most of the people I met there were either British or American. The staff were very good.

The Garden City House Hotel!!!

It is close to the Nile Hilton, just cross the (very crowded) street leeding to Qasr el Nil Bridge, follow the shore of the Nile, take the turn left just in front of the Semiramis Intercontinental and on your left hand you will have the "grand" entrance of the Garden City House Hotel.

It has the grandeur of a poshy 1930's hotel but since than nothing has changed; even the wooden elevator is still in place and working (sometimes). Once it was THE hotel where archeologists stayed while they were doing excavations and it is still popular with archeology students on a field trip.

Do make reservations in front.
