Here:

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: Munich
To: Garmisch-Partenkirchen

You may want to consider buying a Laender-Ticket Bavaria.

http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/prices/germany/laender_tickets.shtml

BTW: Come early. Munich HBF (Central Station) is one of the worst in Germany, and platform 2 (where trains to Garmisch usually leave) is difficult to find.

Thank you Norbert for your prompt reply I will look into the information you provided. I have spent a lot of time in the Munich area and can get around pretty good, however I have never taken the train out of the main train station to go anywhere. I did arrive at the main station in January 1956 on a Troop train and had no desire to ever ride a train like that again, also it was one of the coldest days on record for that winter many degrees below zero. You live in a beautiful town, been there a few times plus I spent many weeks in Oberamagau. Again many thanks for your reply.

There are 2 late trains from Garmisch back to Munich at night, 2204 and 2304 then no more until morning. The Deutsche Bahn website can be viewed in English if you want, click on international guests.
The Bavaria ticket is very good value, E19 I think for 1 person, and valid from 9a.m. until 3a.m. the next day. regional trains only but this is what you would be using. Bavaria ticket can be purchased from a ticket machine, and can of course be used for your journey to G,misch and back to Munich.
The platform you need is way over to the right in the Munich station.

Thank you margsh for the information,I checked out the train station map and saw that the platforms was way over on the other side, platform 30. The price of the ticket looks a lot better than what I read on the train website,it gave a price of 53E for the two of us one way, I like the price you mentioned much better.

Did you read the 2nd link I gave you?

Bavaria ticket cost EUR 28 and is valid from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. for up to 5 persons. That means you go to Garmisch and back on one ticket!!

Thank you Hans, thats sounds much better on the fare. I must be doing things wrong on the Train website as when I check the block for first class return fare it shows a price of Eur 106.80 for two people.

Bavaria ticket is valid for travel in 2nd class only.

If you prefer to travel 1st class (not much difference on regional trains) the return fare for 2 is EUR 112.80.

So it's down to you whether you prefer to pay EUR 28 or EUR 112.80 for 2 times 1:25 travel.

Of course I like the 28 Euro fare but I'm a man, I have to convince the better half of the fare and the savings she cold use shopping, or for me to have that extra piece of Tort. It makes a lot of sense to go 2nd when its only a 1:27 min ride.

I didn,t realise there are 2 of you travelling, still get the Bavaria ticket but the E28 one as the one ticket is for both of you - the cheaper one is for a single traveller.
I have explored most of Bavaria using this ticket as it is such good value, and can also be used on public transport in Munich.
