Schloss Neuschwanstein A little help on route planning ?
Posted: Sat June 13, 2009 08:33 AM UTC
Once we arrive at the village in the foothill of the castle and take the tickets for the castle tour, how we can go up there?

I mean is this better to go by bus to Marienbrucke and then go walking down the hill to the castle

OR

will be better to go straight to the castle and how on foot or somehow else?

Of course I try to figure the easiest route because of that we will have small kids with us and try to find the easiest way :)

Thanks

How small are your children ? The "back door" bus route is usually wet. Just do the carriages on the front side. Those horses work a lot harder. Let your children take them a small treat. Gary

Hi - I think the walk from the bus drop to the castle took about 10 minutes (excluding the stop to Marienbrucke, which is a short distance the other way). It's also a little hilly. The kids might like the bridge and maybe appreciate the view (any Disney princess fans?). I think you can manage the walk if you really want to go to Marienbrucke. Enjoy!

The trail from the bus stop over to the castle doesn't always get a lot of sunlight so it will stay damp,in places, from a mist or rain shower a bit longer than the walking/horse trail. You can also walk from the castle over to the bridge. By doing so, you aren't obligating yourself to travel through that area unless you wish to. In case you don't have the web link, it's: (www.hohenschwangau.de). There is a flag halfway down the left side of the page you can click on to translate the pages to English. The specific transportation link is: (www.hohenschwangau.de/553.0.html). Gary

Thank You ! I hope you have a really nice time at the castle. I always visited during the middle of winter to avoid the crowds. I changed my VT photo to a view out the window of the Throne Room of the castle. Gary

If you have a car while visiting the castle, you might also wish to visit the Wieskirche, which is in that area: (www.wieskirche.de/eframeset.htm). Gary

Dear Garry. I really deaply appreciate your help to us.

From what I can see you've been more than 1 times in the area and you know it well. You say that you go there in the winter to avoid crowds.

We plan to be there in the middle of July on a working day (no weekend). Do you believe that we have to wait a lot ????

I think that : while we arrive in the Hohenschwangau we need 4 hours to complete the vist JUST to Neus/stein castle. Am I correct ?

LET ME EXPLAIN OUR DAILY PLAN AND YOU CAN COMMENT ON IT (IF YA WANT)
Start from Mittenwald,0930 - 11.00
go to Neuschwanstein Castle, 11.00 - 15.00
back to Oberramergau (short walk to the village) 16.00 - 17.00
then at Linderhoff Castle (just the gardens and fountains)17.00 - 18.00
and if we've time a walk around Garmish-P.Kirche 18.30 -20.30

What about it ??

Note that we don't want to get in museums etc just to "smell" the ambience and the style of the villages.

Drop me a line whenever possible.
Take care

Lois

I'm not the person to ask about driving times in Bavaria, lol. When I went to the castles, and Austria, and Italy, I did so on tours arranged by the US military. We didn't have to worry about parking, or standing in ticket lines as the tickets were pre-purchased. You can order tickets online up to the day before you wish to tour the castle: (https://www.lisl.de/765.0.html) & (https.www.lisl.de/548.0.html), will cover that process. The tickets are for the tour on the day you choose, at the time you choose only. There is an area map at: (www.hohenscwangau.de/545.0.html), if you haven't already found it. As far as crowds go, German schools are in session year round, with staggered summer vacation periods. Some of the kids will always be on summer vacation, and traveling with their families! You can do a web search for "German School Holidays in 2009". There will be web sites that will have that information. I have to go for a bit. Gary
